Shehzad ton powers Pakistan to win

Written By Unknown on Minggu, 30 Maret 2014 | 21.25

DHAKA: Opener Ahmed Shehzad smashed an unbeaten 111 off 62 balls as Pakistan thrashed hosts Bangladesh by 50 runs to stay on course for the semifinals of the World Twenty20 in Dhaka on Sunday.

Scorecard | Super 10 Standings | Match in Pics

The 22-year-old from Lahore hit 10 boundaries and five sixes in his first T20 international century to lift Pakistan to a commanding 190-5 after they elected to bat.

Bangladesh managed only 140-7 in reply in front of a sell-out home crowd of 25,000 at the Sher-e-Bangla stadium to suffer their third successive defeat in group two of the Super-10s.

With both Bangladesh and Australia out of the race, the winner of Tuesday's last league match between Pakistan and the West Indies will join India in the semifinals from the group.

Shehzad, who reached his century off 58 balls in the 18th over, was caught off a Mashrafe Mortaza no-ball in the 19th after hitting the previous ball for a six.

The error proved expensive as Pakistan scored 44 runs in the last two overs, with Mortaza conceding 24 in the penultimate over.

Shehzad hammered 31 in an opening stand of 43 with Kamran Akmal (nine) that came off just 27 deliveries.

Bangladesh fought back by taking three quick wickets, two of them by left-arm spinner Abdur Razzak, as Pakistan slipped to 71-3 by the 10th over.

Umar Akmal, Pakistan's hero against Australia when he made 94 off 54 balls, was dismissed by Mohammad Mahmudullah for no score.

Shehzad gave the innings a boost by smashing two sixes and as many boundaries in the 13th over bowled by seamer Ziaur Rahman, which cost 22 runs.

Shehzad put on 83 for the fourth wicket with Shoaib Malik (26) in the only substantial partnership of the innings, a lesson that escaped the Bangladesh batsmen.

The hosts, looking for a bright start, lost four top-order wickets in 9.1 overs with just 47 runs on the board.

Shakib Al Hasan delighted the crowd with a 32-ball 38 that included two sixes and two fours, before he top-edged a catch off seamer Umar Gul in the 15th over to effectively end Bangladesh's challenge.

Gul finished with three for 30 in four overs, while off-spinner Saeed Ajmal took two for 20.

India play Australia in the second match of the double-header later on Sunday.

Shehzad ton powers Pakistan to win

NEW DELHI: Chasing a massive 191-run target, Bangladesh lost wickets at regular intervals against Pakistan in a crucial Group 2 league match of the ICC World Twenty20 at Shere Bangla National Stadium in Mirpur on Sunday.

Scorecard | Super 10 Standings

The hosts lost four wickets inside 10 overs to be reduced to 47/4 in 9.1 overs.

Bangladesh started their chase positively as they added 30 runs quickly but the script changed dramatically when Umar Gul dismissed Tamim Iqbal (16) in the fifth over.

Earlier, opener Ahmed Shehzad slammed unbeaten 62-ball 111 to boost Pakistan to 190/5.

Unconquered Shehzad smacked five huge sixes and ten boundaries in his magical knock as he became the first Pakistani batsman to score a century in Twenty20 Internationals.

Shahid Afridi also played a blinder in the end as the all-rounder smashed two sixes and a four in his quick-fire 9-ball 22.

Shehzad added 83 runs with Shoaib Malik (26) for the fourth wicket to lead the resurgent of the Pakistan innings after they lost Umar Akmal (0) and skipper Mohammad Hafeez (8) in three balls to be reduced to 71/3 in 9.2 overs.

Shehzad was the chief aggressor as he raced to his fifty in just 30 balls, which included two sixes and five fours, and continued his momentum till the end.

Spinner Abdur Razzak struck in the fifth over to give Bangladesh big breakthrough as he removed Pakistan opener Kamran Akmal (9).

Shehzad made the maximum use of the mandatory powerplay as he smashed five fours and a six to help Pakistan get past 50 in overs.

Pakistan got off to blistering start after skipper Hafeez won the toss and decided to bat.

Pakistan have made one change, bringing in Sohail Tanvir in place of Bilawal Bhatti. Bangladesh brought back Abdur Razzak and left out Sohag Gazi.

Pakistan are gearing up to take a step forward towards semifinal qualification as they aim to get past an out-of-sync Bangladesh.

A victory against Bangladesh will officially end Australia's theoretical chance of qualifying for the last four as George Bailey's men can win only two matches from here on.

The victory will also make the West Indies versus Pakistan clash on April 1 a virtual quarterfinal, which will decide the second team from the group after India.

For Bangladesh, they are hoping against hope that they are able to pull a coup of sorts by upsetting the Pakistan applecart.

Teams:

Pakistan: Ahmed Shehzad, Kamran Akmal, Mohammad Hafeez, Umar Akmal, Sohaib Maqsood, Shoaib Malik, Shahid Afridi, Sohail Tanvir, Umar Gul, Zulfiqar Babar, Saeed Ajmal

Bangladesh: Tamim Iqbal, Anamul Haque, Shamsur Rahman, Shakib Al Hasan, Mushfiqur Rahim, Nasir Hossain, Mahmudullah, Ziaur Rahman, Abdur Razzak, Mashrafe Mortaza, Al-Amin Hossain

Muirhead scalps dangerous Virat Kohli

NEW DELHI: James Muirhead broke a growing stand between Ajinkya Rahane and Virat Kohli when he dismissed the latter in their ICC World T20 match at the Shere Bangla National Stadium in Mirpur.

Scorecard

Muirhead had Kohli (23) caught by Cameron White at long-off to break a gritty 40-run stand that Kohli had with Rahane after India lost Rohit Sharma early.

Brad Hodge provided Australia with their first breakthrough when he had Rohit caught in the first over itself after Australian captain George Bailey won the toss and decided to bowl.

India have made two changes for this inconsequential league match by brining in Ajinkya Rahane in place of Shikhar Dhawan and replacing Mohammed Shami by Mohit Sharma.

Australia, who bring in Cameron White in place of James Faulkner, have been knocked out of the tournament following Pakistan's comprehensive 50-run victory over Bangladesh earlier on Sunday.

On a roll after completing a hat-trick of victories, title contenders India would look to continue with their winning ways in the tournament against a struggling Australian team.

Having registered comprehensive wins against Pakistan, West Indies and Bangladesh in three successive matches to qualify for the semifinals, the confidence of the team is at an all-time high as they face George Bailey's Australia which has not done justice to their immense potential.

With back-to-back defeats against Pakistan and West Indies, the Australian team are all but out of the competition with a faint mathematical possibility that has kept them afloat and interested.

But for that to happen, George Bailey and his team first need to beat India by a comprehensive margin which looks a distant reality considering the current form of the two teams.

Team:

India: MS Dhoni (Capt. & wk), Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, Yuvraj Singh, Suresh Raina, Ravindra Jadeja, Ravichandran Ashwin, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Amit Mishra, Mohit Sharma, Ajinkya Rahane.

Australia: George Bailey (captain), Aaron Finch, David Warner, Shane Watson, George Bailey, Glenn Maxwell, Brad Hodge, Mitchell Starc, Doug Bollinger, James Muirhead, Cameron White.

India crumble against Australian bowlers

NEW DELHI: After being put into bat first, India was shaken as they lost quick wickets against Australia in their ICC World T20 match at the Shere Bangla National Stadium in Mirpur.

Scorecard

Doug Bollinger struck to dismiss Ajinkya Rahane (19) soon after James Muirhead got the prized wicket of Virat Kohli (23) by having the Indian vice-captain caught by Cameron White at long-off.

The Rahane-Kohli duo put up a gritty 40-run partnership for the second wicket to steady the Indian innings that was jolted when they lost Rohit Sharma early.

Brad Hodge provided Australia with their first breakthrough when he had Rohit caught in the first over itself after Australian captain George Bailey won the toss and decided to bowl.

NEW DELHI: Hashim Amla came out all guns blazing to give South Africa blistering start against England in their last Group 1 league match of the ICC World T20 at Zahur Ahmed Chowdhury Stadium in Chittagong.

Scorecard

Amla continued to hammer England bowlers all over the park and took South Africa past 50 runs in the sixth over.

Earlier, England skipper Stuart Broad won the toss and decided to field against South Africa.

With regular captain Faf Du Plessis serving a one-match ban for slow over rates, AB de Villiers leads South Africa.

Farhaan Behardien replaced Du Plessis while Wayne Parnell came in for Lonwabo Tsotsobe.
England started with a loss against New Zealand, courtesy rain that robbed them of a chance to defend their total of 172/6, but the Broad-captained side brought its campaign back on track with a six-wicket victory over table-toppers Sri Lanka.

With back-to-back victories, South Africa have put themselves in contention for a semifinal berth and they will look to seal the berth.

South Africa had started their campaign on a sour note, losing to Sri Lanka by five runs, but Proteas notched up successive wins against New Zealand and the Netherlands in the next two games to stay in the hunt.

Teams:

England: Michael Lumb, Alex Hales, Moeen Ali, Eoin Morgan, Jos Buttler, Ravi Bopara, Tim Bresnan, Chris Jordan, Stuart Broad (capt), James Tredwell, Jade Dernbach

McCullum slams fifty to lead Kiwi chase

NEW DELHI: Chasing a 152-run target, New Zealand was boosted by Brendon McCullum's crucial half-ton in their ICC World T20 match at the Zahur Ahmed Chowdhury Stadium in Chittagong.

Scorecard

McCullum slammed his half-century in 39 balls with 3 smashing boundaries and 2 scintillating sixes to his credit.

Previously, Logan van Beek broke a growing stand between Brendon McCullum and Kane Williamson when he scalped the latter.

Van Beek forced Williamson (29) to knick a lose outside-off delivery straight to wicket-keeper Wesley Barresi.

The Williamson-McCullum duo put up a solid 42-run partnership for the second wicket right after New Zealand got off to a bad start when they lost Guptill early in their chase of 152.

Guptill (9) was caught behind by Barresi off the bowling of Timm van der Gugten to leave New Zealand reeling at 20/1 at the end of 4 overs.

Earlier, Peter Borren and Tom Cooper batted solidly as the Netherlands posted a challenging 151-4 against New Zealand.

Borren made his highest T20 score of 49 and Cooper scored 40 not out during their invaluable 60-run stand for the fourth wicket off just 35 balls.

The pairing ensured the Netherlands recorded a testing chase score after they were sent into bat at Zahur Ahmed Chowdhury stadium.

Borren hit seven boundaries and a six off 35 balls to improve on his previous best T20 score of 38 not out that he made against Afghanistan at Sharjah last year.

Cooper knocked two sixes and four boundaries off 23 balls to help his team add 43 in the last five overs.

The Netherlands were off to a steady 34-run start with opener Stephan Myburgh hitting a boundary and a six before he holed out to paceman Trent Boult, who replaced Tim Southee in the team.

New Zealand also brought in all-rounder Jimmy Neesham for Colin Munro from the line-up which beat England on Saturday.

Michael Swart made a run-a-ball 26. The Netherlands, unchanged from the side out for the lowest-ever T20 score of 39 against Sri Lanka in their first game here, need a win to stay in the tournament.

The top two teams from both groups will qualify for the semifinals. India have already qualified for the last four from Group Two.

New Zealand beat Netherlands by 6 wkts

CHITTAGONG: Captain Brendon McCullum's 65 powered New Zealand to a six-wicket win against the Netherlands and kept their hopes alive for a semifinal spot from Group One in the World Twenty20.

Scorecard | Super-10 Standings | Match in Pics

The Kiwis reached their 152-run target with an over to spare to bring up their second victory in three matches in the super 10 stage.

McCullum, the most prolific run-scorer in the shortest format of the game, hit four boundaries and three sixes during his 45-ball knock, also bringing up his 13th half century in T20 internationals.

The 32-year-old, who became the first batsman to cross 2,000 international runs in the format, stitched together meaty stands with Kane Williamson (29), Ross Taylor (18) and Corey Anderson (20 not out) to make it a comfortable chase for his side.

Paceman Timm van der Gugten took three wickets for 30 runs for the Netherlands.

Earlier, captain Peter Borren compiled his highest T20 score of 49 to anchor the Dutch innings and take them to 151 for four wickets after being put in to bat.

The 30-year-old hit seven fours and a six during his 35-ball knock and added 60 for the fourth wicket with Tom Cooper (40 not out) to give the Netherlands some momentum after a slow start.

Cooper hit four boundaries and two sixes during his 23-ball unbeaten stay at the wicket but New Zealand pulled things back with some miserly bowling in the death overs.

Scorecard

Amla continued to hammer England bowlers all over the park and took South Africa past 50 runs in the sixth over.

Play was disrupted because of floodlight failure forcing the players to walk off the field.

The lights were out for ten minutes before the players came back out and play continued.
Earlier, England skipper Stuart Broad won the toss and decided to field against South Africa.

India elect to bowl against Bangladesh

Written By Unknown on Jumat, 28 Maret 2014 | 21.25

NEW DELHI: A gritty stand between Anamul Haque and Mushfiqur Rahim steadied Bangladesh's innings after early blows in their ICC World T20 match at the Shere Bangla National Stadium in Mirpur.

Scorecard | Super 10 Standings

The Anamul-Rahim duo put up a determined 30-plus run partnership for the 4th wicket after Bangladesh got off to a bad start when R Ashwin picked up two wickets in two balls.

Ashwin first scalped Tamim Iqbal (6) when the Bangladesh opener was caught at slip by Suresh Raina and then dismissed Shamsur Rahman (0) on the very next delivery.

Bhuvneshwar Kumar, who gave away an expensive first over, then picked up the third wicket when he got the better of Shakib Al Hasan's (1) stumps to leave Bangladesh at 22/3 at the end of 5 overs.

Earlier, Indian captain MS Dhoni won the toss and decided to bowl against Bangladesh.

Aiming to clinch the semifinal berth at the earliest, a confident India would be eyeing for another commanding performance against Bangladesh.

On paper, it will be a 'David versus Goliath' contest as Bangladesh are no match for an Indian team who are now being considered as serious contenders for the title.

But the fickleness of the shortest format means that a gritty fight from the Tigers can't be ruled out against some of the biggest names in world cricket.

On current form too, there has been a big difference between the two teams as they get ready to lock horns at the Sher-e-Bangla National Stadium.

The Indian team's confidence has certainly shot up after their wins against quality opposition like Pakistan and defending champions West Indies.

For Bangladesh, the campaign has gone haywire since their loss to Hong Kong in Chittagong in the qualifying phase.

Teams:

India: MS Dhoni (Capt & wk), Shikhar Dhawan, Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, Yuvraj Singh, Suresh Raina, Ravindra Jadeja, Ravichandran Ashwin, Amit Mishra, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Mohammed Shami.

Bangladesh: Tamim Iqbal, Anamul Haque, Shamsur Rahman, Shakib Al Hasan, Mushfiqur Rahim (Capt & wk), Nasir Hossain, Mahmudullah, Ziaur Rahman, Sohag Gazi, Mashrafe Mortaza, Al-Amin Hossain.

Windies clinch thriller against Australia

NEW DELHI: Chris Gayle started with flair while Darren Sammy finished with a flourish as West Indies got the better of Australia by six wickets in an exciting Group 2 League encounter of the ICC World T20 on Thursday.

Scorecard| Match In Pics

Opting to bat, Australia scored a competitive 178 for eight in 20 overs, riding on Glenn Maxwell's 45 and Brad Hodge's 35. West Indies got the runs with a couple of balls to spare.

Needing 31 off the last two, Sammy (34 no, 13 balls) smashed Mitchell Starc for 19 runs in the penultimate over to bring the equation down to 12 in the final over bowled by James Faulkner. The skipper hit two fours and three sixes.

After two dot balls, Faulkner bowled a full-toss that Sammy hit over long-off for a six to bring the equation down to six from three balls. Sammy then hit the next straight over the bowler's head and threw his bat running towards the dug-out as his delirious mates joined in the celebration.

Sammy had said yesterday that he doesn't care whether "James Faulkner likes West Indians or not" but he gave a fitting reply to the bowler as Gayle again did the Gangnam jig with vengeance as poor Faulkner could only look on.

The win brightened West Indies' chances for a semi-final berth while Australia will find it difficult to make a comeback in the tournament.

After a couple of relatively quiet matches, Gayle picked up the Australian attack for some special treatment. He set the tone from the third delivery of the second over bowled by left-arm speedster Mitchell Starc. Starc pitched it up outside the off-stump and was smashed through covers with bare minimum footwork.

The next was a fuller delivery on the middle and was hit over the bowler's head that just dropped in front of the ropes. The next two back-of-the-length deliveries were pulled through mid-wicket and square leg region.

In the next over from Doug Bollinger, Gayle got his first six of the game with a pull over square leg fence. His second six was a flat-batted hit over long-on off Shane Watson.

With Gayle picking up the tempo, it became easier for Smith at the other end, and he did his bit with an uppishly driven four off Starc that brought up the team 50 in 4.2 overs.

Starc did get the better of Smith with an away going delivery that he nicked for 17. Meanwhile, Gayle completed his 11th T20 International half-century off only 31 balls. But it was the 20-year-old unheralded leg-spinner James Muirhead, who brought cheers for the Aussie camp getting Gayle out for 53 off 35 balls. He tossed one up inviting the Jamaican to come out and the batsman found out Maxwell at deep mid-wicket. Gayle's knock had six fours and two sixes.

Once Gayle was out, Australia hoped of getting back. Lendl Simons (26), who had a fruitful 51-run stand with Gayle, pulled a rising delivery from Bollinger as Maxwell again took a well-judged catch at the deep square leg boundary.

Marlon Samuels (12) wasted precious deliveries at the fag end as the match slipped out of West Indies' grasp. Dwayne Bravo hit Muirhead and then Starc for two huge sixes to keep West Indies in hunt.

Earlier, Maxwell (45) and Hodge (35) made useful contributions as Australia put up a decent 178 for eight on board after George Bailey elected to bat. David Warner (20) and Aaron Finch (16) started well, with the latter hitting leggie Samuel Badree for a six and couple of boundaries as Australia raced to 33 in no time.

But Finch paid for his indiscretion when he tried to mindlessly slog Samuels over deep mid-wicket. Badree, who was hit for 15 in his first over from the Pavilion End, saw his end being changed and it paid dividend.

He got a straighter delivery which Warner tried to cut. There was very little room and the delivery came straight in to disturb the timber. Shane Watson (2) failed to read a doosra from Narine and was stumped by Ramdin.

At 41 for three, Maxwell and Bailey got together for a brief but entertaining partnership of 36 runs in only 3.5 overs before the skipper got out for 12.

Maxwell picked up Sammy for some special treatment as he was hit for a couple of boundaries and a six. The best came off Samuels when Maxwell slog-swept him into the deep mid-wicket stand. He picked up a flighted delivery from Badree to deposit him over extra-cover. Maxwell's 45 came off 22 balls and was studded with five fours and three sixes.

Hodge, as usual, played an important innings to prop up the score before he tried to reverse sweep a 'carrom ball' from Narine.

Narine (2/19 from 4 overs) was the best bowler on view while Badree (2/37 in 4 overs) and Samuels (2/19) shared the spoils.

NEW DELHI: Stung by the Supreme Court's sweeping proposals to cleanse the game, under-fire BCCI president N Srinivasan is learnt to have had telephonic conferences with his colleagues and legal experts on the future course of action.

Srinivasan, who had a cataract surgery on Wednesday, spent most part of the day at home having meetings with his lawyers though he continued to remain mum on the Supreme Court's observation that he should step down.

The Supreme Court on Thursday proposed the replacement of Srinivasan by former captain Sunil Gavaskar and suspension of franchises Chennai Super Kings and Rajasthan Royals from IPL 7 till the pendency of the betting and spot fixing case.

The apex court also proposed to pass an order barring India Cements officials from getting involved with the functioning of the BCCI.

There was speculation that BCCI secretary Sanjay Patel will meet Srinivasan in Chennai during the day but no such meeting took place.

"There was a possibility that Patel, who cut short his visit to the UAE, would meet Srinivasan today to discuss the future course of action. But the meeting did not take place," a BCCI source said.

BCCI officials known to be close to Srinivasan have been tightlipped over what he planned to do in view of the Supreme Court proposals which virtually leaves no escape route for the Tamil Nadu strongman.

Three of five BCCI Vice Presidents -- Shivlal Yadav, Ravi Sawant and Chitrak Mitra -- had put pressure on Srinivasan by saying that he should honour Supreme Court's observation but he has still not heeded to their advice.

Srinivasan had stepped aside in June 2013 after his son-in-law Gurunath Meiyappan's name cropped up in the fixing scandal, which had to led to ban on paceman S Sreesanth and his two other Rajasthan Royals colleagues.

In his absence, former BCCI chief Jagmohan Dalmiya discharged the duties of the President.

However, at the BCCI AGM in September 2013, Srinivasan was re-elected as President.

Supreme Court had appointed a three-member probe panel, led by retired judge Justice Mukul Mudgal to investigate into the fixing saga. The Apex court-appointed panel had replaced BCCI's own two-man probe panel, which had exonerated Meiyappan of any wrongdoing and its verdict was challenged in the courts.

Spin vital to India's early WC success

Written By Unknown on Rabu, 26 Maret 2014 | 21.25

MIRPUR: India have surprised at the World Twenty20 not only by their success but in that its being led by their spinners.

India came to Bangladesh with little recent success in one-day internationals and having played only one T20 since December 2012.

Yet, only them and Sri Lanka are unbeaten after winning their first two games, and India's spinners rather than one of their robust batsmen have been match-winners.

Legspinner Amit Mishra grabbed 2-22 against Pakistan and 2-18 against the West Indies to take both man-of-the-match awards.

The track at Sher-e-Bangla Stadium has helped spin, and since the venue will host all the knockout matches, captains have a lot of strategizing to do in the coming days.

"As far as the bowling is concerned, I am really happy to see how our spinners are bowling," India captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni said after his team's second win. "Yes, there is a bit of help for them but at the same time, you have to execute your plans well, especially in this format."

Mishra, who has three hat-tricks in the Indian Premier League but has not enjoyed a long run in international cricket, justified Dhoni's decision to play an extra spinner.

"My captain has been really supportive and been telling me that I will only do better as the tournament progresses," Mishra said. "He has given me the freedom to attack, to toss the bowl up as I like to do."

India's spinners have so far bagged 12 wickets and the pacemen five, turning around their perceived weak bowling attack which has restricted the opposition to 129 and 130 in their first two games.

The tournament has also seen a host of spinners open the bowling including West Indian leg-spinner Samuel Badree and Pakistan left-armer Zulfiqar Babar.

Badree grabbed 4-15 against Bangladesh on Tuesday while Babar took 2-26 with the new ball in Pakistan's 16-run win over Australia on Sunday.

Australia opener Aaron Finch said ahead of Friday's match against the West Indies that playing spin was a challenge, especially the prospect of facing someone like Badree early on.

"Badree has opened the bowling for them for a few games now," Finch said. "He is an interesting bowler. He bowls a great length. He is someone who is hard to hit down the ground and it is a bit of a risk if you go across the line."

Finch said even the more familiar spinners on the circuit need to be watched out for.

"A lot of us have played (West Indies') Sunil Narine in the Big Bash and in the IPL. Having faced him quite a bit, we are going to have our plans," Finch added. "He is still a quality bowler. He spins it both ways. Anyone who does that is going to present a challenge."

While spinners have won matches in the tournament, their lack of success has impacted games, too.

When Brad Hogg did not get wickets, Australia lost to Pakistan; when Saeed Ajmal or Narine did not make inroads, India won with ease.

Ajmal, Narine still have time and games. The tournament took a break on Wednesday, and will resume on Thursday with South Africa-Netherlands, and Sri Lanka-England.

Srinivasan exploring legal options

CHENNAI: Under-fire BCCI president N Srinivasan is exploring various legal options though he continued to remain mum on the Supreme Court observation that he should step down from his post for a fair probe into the IPL fixing scandal.

The beleaguered Srinivasan, who underwent a cataract surgery on Wednesday, had a series of meeting with legal experts during the day though no official word as to what he plans to do has come out yet.

His legal counsel PS Raman also met him at his residence but declined to speak on the issue.

"He (Srinivasan) had a cataract operation in the other eye this morning. I have come to meet him because of that. It is only a courtesy call," Raman told reporters.

When asked specifically whether Srinivasan was contemplating to step down in view of the Supreme Court observation, he refused to comment.

It is learnt that 69-year-old BCCI supremo is exploring various legal options available to him.

Srinivasan's continued silence has raised speculation that he may not resign immediately but may wait for the hearing to resume on Thursday before taking a final decision. Seeking a review is one of the options available to him.

BCCI secretary Sanjay Patel, who was in the United Arab Emirates to attend Asian Cricket Council meeting and also oversee the arrangements for the upcoming Indian Premier League, has cut short his visit and is expected to reach the city Thursday morning.

Patel is scheduled to meet Srinivasan soon after his arrival here to decide the future course of action.

The court, which had on Tuesday asked BCCI chief as to why he was sticking to the chair, wanted Srinivasan to quit on his own. The court had said if Srinivasan will not quit, they will pass an order for his removal.

After going through the contents of a report filed in a sealed cover by apex court-appointed probe panel into the scandal, a bench headed by Justice AK Patnaik said there are "very very serious" allegations made in the report and unless the BCCI president steps down, no fair probe can be conducted.

Three of five BCCI vice presidents -- Shivlal Yadav, Ravi Sawant and Chitrak Mitra -- had put pressure on Srinivasan by saying that he should honour Supreme Court's observation but the Tamil Nadu strong man stuck to his guns.

BCCI's new election rules will come into effect in September this year when the principal office-bearers and vice-presidents elected at AGMs from 2014 shall hold the office for a period of three years. Clause 15 (v) of BCCI's Rules and Regulations will apply if Srinivasan resigns.

The clause reads: "ln case of vacancy occurring in the office of President by reason of death or by him being adjudged insolvent or by him being convicted in a criminal case by a competent Court or by resignation or otherwise, the Hony. Secretary shall within 15 days convene a Special General Body Meeting to elect the President who shall be nominated by at least one full member from the zone which proposed the name of the President whose term was cut short prematurely. Such person who is so elected shall hold office till the next elections."

Since Srinivasan hails from South, it means that South Zone will have the right to nominate an eligible candidate. Shivlal Yadav, who is the vice-president from South Zone will have a good chance to become the president in such a scenario.

Restrained Gayle a gamble for Windies

DHAKA: The good news for rival bowlers is Chris Gayle has abandoned his onslaught-from-the outset approach. The bad news is, the West Indies opener has decided to delay his big hitting so he can explode in the later stages.

Many observers believe West Indies are taking a huge gamble by taming a wild force with a strategy that could make or break their World Twenty20 title defence in Bangladesh.

The swashbuckling opener recently joked he made Sohag Gazi a household name by hitting the Bangladeshi off-spinner for a six off the first ball of a Test match in Dhaka.

More than a year later, Gayle's recent batting philosophy has been to shun such extravagance and preserve his aggression for a delayed assault.

Worryingly for his team, the ploy has not really worked so far in the sport's showcase Twenty20 tournament.

Gayle managed just about run-a-ball scores of 34 and 48 in the defeat against India and the victory against Bangladesh, respectively. He was dropped twice in the match against India, the first before he could open his account.

Those runs came at a strike rate that fails to justify the flamboyant southpaw's stature as arguably the most destructive batsman in Twenty20 cricket.

Also, it has shifted the onus on his opening partner Dwayne Smith to provide the flying start Gayle had performed until his batting approached changed.

The policy led to a rare sight as Smith outscored Gayle in Tuesday's 73-run victory against Bangladesh, falling after a quickfire 72 while his opening partner was still pottering around for his first 19 runs off 29 balls.

"I don't know if it's a strategy or not," Smith said after Tuesday's win.

"My aim is to get off a good start and that's how I play. If Chris is working himself in, at least there will be no pressure on him if I score freely."

Gayle's sheer presence, that expressionless countenance, has intimidated rival bowlers but West Indies would badly need him to hit the kind of form he is famous for if they are to retain their World Twenty20 title.

Smith was certain Gayle would be back to his explosive best before long.

"I'm sure that Chris will get around at some point in this tournament because he is batting through the first six and he will be batting through the first 10 overs," Smith added.

"I'm sure at some point he is going to get off and get some good scores."

Ex-BCCI chief calls for IPL's suspension

NEW DELHI: Stating that the "revelation" in the recent IPL fixing scandal could only be the tip of the iceberg, former BCCI president Shashank Manohar on Wednesday called for the suspension of the IPL till a thorough probe by the CBI nails the culprits and the game is cleaned up.

Manohar, who was succeeded as BCCI president by N Srinivasan, was also critical of the decision to stage a part of the 2014 IPL in the UAE next month, which he says "will further tarnish the already murky waters surrounding the tournament".

Manohar's call came just a day after Supreme Court made stinging observations that Srinivasan should step down to ensure a fair investigation to the IPL spot-fixing scandal.

"The Supreme Courts observation is that there are very, very serious allegations made in the report and unless the BCCI president steps down, no fair probe can be conducted," he said.

"Considering the latest developments in the BCCI, it is my considered opinion that until the faith of the people in the integrity of the game is restored, the IPL tournament for the year 2014 should be suspended," Manohar was quoted as saying.

"As regards suspending IPL 2014, the board members should remind themselves that money/profits is neither the aim nor the objective of the board. The primary duty is to promote a clean game of cricket," he added.

He said in view of the serious allegations, regarding betting, spot-fixing and match-fixing, the public at large has lost it's faith in IPL games.

"I had said long back, when the scandal broke, that all IPL matches should be investigated. Only then can all the erring parties be punished and the clean-up initiated. What has been lately revealed could well be the tip of the iceberg. I feel that a thorough probe needs to be done by CBI as the canvas of the activities extends throughout the country," said Manohar who was the BCCI chief from 2008 to 2011.

"Cricket is the most popular game in India and enjoys a dedicated viewership of millions. This viewership is what generates income and fuels BCCI's clout on an international level. If the faith of the public is not restored, the BCCI would be failing the public which has catapulted it to being the most influential player on the international scene," Manohar said.

He also voiced concern at the decision of the BCCI to hold the first leg of the IPL in UAE (after the government refused to provide security due to Lok Sabha elections) "in view of certain information regarding rampant betting and match-fixing" in that country.

South Africa and Bangladesh were also considered as possible venues but the BCCI finally decided to hold the first part of the IPL in the UAE.

"Many years back, a conscious decision was taken by the BCCI to abstain from matches in the Middle East in view of certain information regarding rampant betting and match-fixing. As far as I know, that decision has not been revoked. Due to the upcoming Lok Sabha elections, the decision to shift IPL matches to the Middle East will further tarnish the already murky waters surrounding the tournament," he said.

SA beat NZ by 2 runs in last-ball thriller

NEW DELHI: Dale Steyn (4-17) bowled a brilliant final over to snatch victory from the jaws of defeat for South Africa as they beat New Zealand by 2 runs in their World Twenty20 clash at Zahur Ahmed Chowdhury Stadium in Chittagong on Monday.

Scorecard | Super-10 Stage Standings

Requiring just seven runs of the final over with 5 wickets in hand, New Zealand looked destined for a win but Steyn has different script to tell in the end.

Steyn dismissed Luke Ronchi with the very first ball of the last over, then followed it up with two dot balls. Nathan McCullum (4) hit the fourth ball for a four making it 3 runs from last two balls.

The drama continued as Steyn got rid of McCullum in the next ball and Ross Taylor (62) was run out in the last ball as Kiwis missed the target by just two runs.

Chasing 171-run target, New Zealand managed 168/8 in their stipulated 20 overs.

Kiwis lost Kane Williamson (51) after he added 51 runs for the third wicket with Ross Taylor to lead their run chase against South Africa in their World Twenty20 clash at Zahur Ahmed Chowdhury Stadium in Chittagong on Monday.

Williamson raced to his fifty in just 31 balls, which included two sixes and five fours, but failed to continue further as AB de Villiers took a brilliant catch near the ropes off Dale Steyn to dismiss him.

New Zealand lost Brendon McCullum (4) and Martin Guptill (22) in successive overs (8th & 9th).

New Zealand openers put on a quick 57-run stand to provide a perfect platform to their run chase. The duo took Kiwis over 50-run mark in 6.2 overs.

Late charge by JP Duminy (86 not out) helped South Africa score 170/6 against New Zealand.

Duminy slammed three massive sixes and ten fours in his quick-fire 43-ball knock.

Duminy raced to his fifty off just 31 balls as South Africa made a gallant fightback after losing wickets at regular intervals early in their innings.

All-rounder Corey Anderson struck again as he caught & bowled David Miller soon after Duminy's fifty.

Hashim Amla (41) lost his wicket in a strange and unlucky way as the ball ricochet from non-striker Duminy's bat to give Anderson an easy caught & bowled chance.

Amla hit just two fours in his patient 40-ball innings.

Sent in to bat, South Africa lost three top-order batsmen early. They lost AB de Villiers (5), Faf du Plessis (13) and Quinton de Kock (4) inside seven overs of their innings.

Spinner Nathan McCullum clean bowled De Villiers in the seventh over to reduce the Proteas to 42/3 in 6.4 overs.

Bowlers provided New Zealand breakthroughs at regular intervals to hamper South African run charge.

Tim Southee dismissed Du Plessis soon after fellow pacer Kyle Mills scalped De Kock in the third over.

Earlier, New Zealand captain Brendon McCullum won the toss and chose to bowl first.

There's still a decent grass coverage on the pitch. The track is dry and there won't be much assistance for the spinners. There'll be a good carry off the pitch.

After winning the toss, McCullum said it's a pretty good wicket but reckoned it's easier batting second.

New Zealand are playing an unchanged XI.

Regular South Africa captain Faf du Plessis, who replaced Farhaan Behardien, said he too would have wanted to bat first.

New Zealand made a winning start to the tournament by beating England in a rain-affected match on Saturday.

New Zealand defied a stubborn England and rain to win their opening World Twenty20 match by nine runs on the Duckworth-Lewis method in Chittagong on Saturday.

Chasing a challenging 173-run target, New Zealand were 52/1 after 5.2 overs when heavy rain came down following a burst of thunder, which halted the match.

After a 25-minute delay when the umpires were due to inspect the ground, the rain started to fall again, prompting them to declare the end of the match and New Zealand the winners on the Duckworth-Lewis formula, used in the event of rain.

New Zealand needed to score 43 in 5.2 overs on the D/L method, which ruled them the winners.

After Saturday's loss to Sri Lanka, South Africa need to win their last three matches in to keep alive their chances of making the semifinals.

Lasith Malinga and Nuwan Kulasekara held their nerve in the death overs with miserly fast bowling as Sri Lanka beat South Africa by five runs on Saturday.

South Africa had the upper hand chasing 166 for victory in their Group One super 10 match and needed 19 runs off the last two overs with five wickets in hand.

But Kulasekara gave away just four runs and picked up the wicket of Farhaan Behardien (five) to leave South Africa needing 15 runs off limited-overs specialist Malinga's final over.

Teams:

South Africa: Faf du Plessis (Capt.), Quinton de Kock, Hashim Amla, AB de Villiers, JP Duminy, David Miller, Albie Morkel, Dale Steyn, Morne Morkel, Imran Tahir, Lonwabo Tsotsobe.

New Zealand: Brendon McCullum (Capt.), Martin Guptill, Kane Williamson, Ross Taylor, Colin Munro, Corey Anderson, Luke Ronchi, Nathan McCullum, Tim Southee, Kyle Mills, Mitchell McClenaghan.

Maxwell falls after explosive 33-ball 74

Written By Unknown on Minggu, 23 Maret 2014 | 21.25

NEW DELHI: Chasing a massive 192-run target, Australia lost Glenn Maxwell (74) after he added a crucial 118 runs for the third wicket with Aaron Finch against Pakistan in their ICC World Twenty20 match at Sher-e-Bangla stadium on Sunday.

Scorecard | Points Table

Shahid Afridi dismissed Aussie skipper George Bailey (4) to put Pakistan back in the reckoning as he reduced Australia to 146/4 in 15.1 overs.

Finch continued to lead the Asutralian run chase as he reached his fifty off 44 balls, which included two sixes and five fours.

Afridi provided Pakistan a crucial break when he dismissed dangerous Maxwell in the 12th over to reduce Australia to 126/3 in 11.4 overs.

Maxwell slammed six maximums and seven fours in his fiery 33-ball knock.

After losing two wickets in the very first over, Maxwell led the Australian fightback with Finch as he raced to his fifty in 18 balls.

Maxwell slammed five sixes and five fours in his quick-fire half-century off just 18 balls, joint fastest by an Australian batsman with David Warner.

Maxwell was unapologetically explosive as he plundered 30 runs off pacer Bilawal Bhatti in one over.

Along with Aaron Finch, Maxwell took Australia over 100-run mark in just eight overs. The duo also added hundred-run partnership off just 51 balls.

Australia lost Shane Watson (4) and David Warner (4) early in the first over.

Spinner Zulfiqar Babar gave Pakistan a perfect start as his double strikes reduced Australia to 8/2.

Sent in to bat, Umar Akmal (94) missed out on a well-deserved century but powered Pakistan to 191/5.

Umar played a gem of an innings as he plundered Aussie bowlers for four maximums and nine fours in his 54-ball blitzkrieg. Mitchell Starc finally got rid of Umar in the final over but it was too little too late.

All-rounder Shahid Afridi (20 not out) also contributed handsomely in the end as he smacked a six and two fours in his 11-ball cameo.

After losing two early wickets, Akmal brothers added a quick 96 runs for the third wicket to revive the Pakistani innings.

Pacer Nathan Coulter-Nile struck again to dismiss Sohaib Maqsood (5) in the 16th over. Maqsood added 26 runs for the fourth wicket with Umar Akmal.

Coulter-Nile also dismissed Kamran Akmal (31) in the 13th over to break the dangerous partnership between the Akmal brothers and reduced Pakistan to 121/3 in 12.5 overs.

Kamran hit four boundaries in his run-a-ball knock as he played perfect partner to his aggressive younger brother.

Umar was at his aggressive best as he raced to his half-century in just 28 balls, which included three massive sixes and five fours.

The duo took Pakistan over 100-run mark in just 11.2 overs as they hammered Aussie bowlers all round the park.

Sent in to bat, Pakistan lost skipper Mohammad Hafeez (13) and Ahmed Shehzad (5) inside five overs.

Shane Watson clean bowled Hafeez in the fifth over to put Pakistan on the back foot. Pakistan were reduced to 25/2 in 4.2 overs.

Paceman Doug Bollinger gave Australia an early breakthrough when he dismissed Pakistani opener Shehzad to reduce Pakistan to 7/1 in 1.4 overs.

Earlier, Australian skipper George Bailey won the toss and decided to bowl first against Pakistan.

Australia included 43-year-old spinner Brad Hogg for their first match, making him the oldest player to take part in the World Twenty20 competitions since the inaugural event in 2007.

Pakistan made one change from the team that lost to India by seven wickets on Friday, replacing seamer Junaid Khan with 35-year-old left-arm spinner Zulfiqar Babar.

India, the West Indies and hosts Bangladesh are the other teams in the group, from which the top two will advance to the semifinals.

Teams:

Australia: George Bailey (captain), Nathan Coulter-Nile, Aaron Finch, Brad Haddin, Brad Hodge, Brad Hogg, Doug Bollinger, Glenn Maxwell, Mitchell Starc, David Warner, Shane Watson.

Pakistan: Mohammad Hafeez (captain), Ahmed Shehzad, Bilawal Bhatti, Kamran Akmal, Saeed Ajmal, Shahid Afridi, Shoaib Malik, Sohaib Maqsood, Umar Akmal, Umar Gul, Zulfiqar Babar.

Pakistan beat Australia by 16 runs

MIRPUR: A rejuvenated Pakistan brought their campaign back on track as they rode on Umar Akmal's scintillating 54-ball 94 to register a 16-run victory over tournament favourites Australia in the ICC World T20 on Sunday.

Scorecard | Points Table

In the end, Glenn Maxwell's belligerent 33-ball-74 wasn't enough for Australia to chase down the formidable total in this group league encounter. After posting 191 for five, Pakistan bowled out Australia, who were in the chase till the 15th over, for 175.

The win ensured that Pakistan stayed in the competition, having lost their opening game to India.

While 'Maxwell-Mayhem' blew apart the Pakistanis in the first 10 overs, the bowlers led by the ever-dependable Saeed Ajmal (1-33) and veteran Shahid Afridi (2-30), made a comeback and the Aussies frittered in their chase after Maxwell was gone.

The turning point was the 18th over bowled by Ajmal in which he gave only one run and also dismissed Aaron Finch (64, 55 balls), who was still carrying on the chase.

If Umar Akmal's knock was a brilliant effort, Maxwell's power-hitting would have swept everyone off their feet. Each of his six sixes were clean hits.

Opposition skipper Hafeez tried to peg him back bowling on his legs but he swept him out off the ground on one occasion and hit him over deep mid-wicket the other time. When Afridi drifted on the pads, he swept over square.

While Maxwell was on a hitting mission, Finch quietly accumulated runs with occasional fours and sixes as they added 118 runs in 10.4 overs.

The watershed moment was the eighth over bowled by Bilawal Bhatti that cost 30 runs. Maxwell hit him for two maximums, apart from a couple of boundaries, to complete his maiden 50 in that over.

When Ajmal tried to push in a quicker one, he was hit towards the deep mid-wicket region. A flighted one on the leg-middle was swept as the first 10 overs produced 117 runs.

Maxwell was finally caught by Ahmed Shehzad off Afridi's bowling to raise hopes of a Pakistan comeback.

Finch completed his 50 off 44 balls with five fours and two sixes as skipper George Bailey (4) was bowled by Afridi. Brad Hodge also didn't stay for long and was caught in the deep by Ajmal off Umar Gul's bowling. Once Finch was bowled by Ajmal, Pakistan victory was sealed.

Earlier, it was Akmal's superb knock and his 96-run partnership with elder brother Kamran (31), which helped Pakistan post a formidable total.

Shehzad (5) tried to pull one from Doug Bollinger that kicked up from back of the length and the skier was taken by the bowler himself. Skipper Mohammed Hafeez hit a couple of fours but Shane Watson bowled one fuller and he played all over it to get bowled.

At 25 for two, Umar joined Kamran and the two brothers counter-attacked the Australian bowling in a swift manner.

While Kamran was happy playing the second fiddle, Umar showed why he is such a highly rated batsman in world cricket. He was dropped at deep square leg boundary by Brad Hogg when he was on 22 but no one can take away the complete authority with which he played the Aussie bowling.

If they bowled full on the off-stump, he thumped it over the extra cover region. When they bowled on the leg-middle line, he converted length deliveries into full-toss and hit them over mid-wicket for a six.

Of the four sixes, one each were hit off Watson and Starc respectively, while the other two were off Finch's slow left-arm spin. Both were half trackers and were deposited into deep mid-wicket stand. His 50 came off 28 deliveries.

Kamran was gone for a run-a-ball 31, holing out in the deep by Warner off Coultier-Nile's bowling, but Umar continued to play his strokes even as Pakistan lost Sohaib Maqsood (5) cheaply.

Umar was six short of a well-deserved century when he gave Mitchell Starc the charge but couldn't clear Maxwell at long-on.

India elect to bowl against West Indies

NEW DELHI: Indian captain MS Dhoni won the toss and decided to bowl against West Indies in their ICC World T20 match at the Shere Bangla National Stadium in Mirpur.

Scorecard | Points Table

Their sagging morale lifted after a thumping win over Pakistan, Indian spinners will now have to brace up for the ever-dangerous Chris Gayle.

A victory against Pakistan was just the kind of shot in the arm that was required before facing a team that has world's most devastating T20 batsman in Gayle.

Dwayne Bravo and Marlon Samuels are also capable enough to destroy any bowling attack on their day.

While Samuels might take some time to settle down, he can effortlessly shift gears as he had shown some 18 months ago during the last edition's final at the Premadasa Stadium in Colombo.

The Indian batsmen had an easy day in office against Pakistan with a smaller target to chase. But both Shikhar Dhawan and Rohit Sharma would also do well to get a big score under their belt.

Teams:

India: Shikhar Dhawan, Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, Yuvraj Singh, Suresh Raina, MS Dhoni (Capt & wk), Ravichandran Ashwin, Ravindra Jadeja, Amit Mishra, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Mohammed Shami.

West Indies: Chris Gayle, Dwayne Smith, Marlon Samuels, Lendl Simmons, Dwayne Bravo, Dinesh Ramdin (wk), Darren Sammy (Capt.), Andre Russell, Sunil Narine, Samuel Badree, Krishmar Santokie.

Windies off to slow start against India

Sri Lanka beat South Africa by 5 runs

Written By Unknown on Sabtu, 22 Maret 2014 | 21.24

NEW DELHI: Lasith Malinga and Nuwan Kulasekara held their nerve in the death overs with miserly fast bowling as Sri Lanka beat South Africa by five runs in their World Twenty20 opener at the Zahur Ahmed Chowdhury Stadium in Chittagong on Saturday.

Scorecard | Points Table | Match in Pics

South Africa had the upper hand chasing 166 for victory in their Group One super 10 match and needed 19 runs off the last two overs with five wickets in hand.

But Kulasekara gave away just four runs and picked up the wicket of Farhaan Behardien (five) to leave South Africa needing 15 runs off limited-overs specialist Malinga's final over.

Dale Steyn (zero) and the dangerous David Miller (19) were run out off the first two deliveries and although Imran Tahir (eight not out) managed a last-ball six, the chase had already gone out of South Africa's reach.

AB de Villiers, captaining the side in the absence of the injured Faf du Plessis, was not impressed by his team's finish.

"I do not think it was our best bowling performance ever but definitely our bowlers did a good job to get us into play," De Villiers, who leads South Africa in the 50-over format, said at the presentation ceremony.

"If we are going to win this tournament we gotta chase down totals like this. We know that.

"We got close, we were on track but unfortunately very disappointing finish. We lost too many wickets towards the end."

JP Duminy (39) top-scored for the Proteas, who ended on 160 for eight, and off-spinner Sachithra Senanayake was the most successful Sri Lankan bowler with figures of two for 22.

Opener Kusal Perera's assault gave Sri Lanka the tempo at the start of their innings and Angelo Mathews provided the late fireworks to lift them to 165 for seven after their captain Dinesh Chandimal had won the toss.

The diminutive Perera made clear his intentions with two fours and a six in three deliveries off Steyn's opening over and brought up his fifty off just 29 balls.

He struck 61 off 40 balls, including six fours and three sixes, before falling to leg-spinner Tahir, who stemmed the run flow and picked up three wickets for 26 runs.

Mathews was bowled by Steyn in the final over of the Sri Lanka innings but not before the test and 50-over captain had compiled 43 off 32 balls.

"We had bowlers like Malinga and (Ajantha) Mendis. We thought the total would be enough. We did well as a unit," Chandimal said.

Teams:

South Africa: Quinton de Kock, Hashim Amla, JP Duminy, AB de Villiers (captain), David Miller, Farhaan Behardien, Albie Morkel, Dale Steyn, Morne Morkel, Lonwabo Tsotsobe, Imran Tahir

Sri Lanka: Kusal Perera, Tillakaratne Dilshan, Mahela Jayawardene, Kumar Sangakkara, Dinesh Chandimal (captain), Angelo Mathews, Thisara Perera, Nuwan Kulasekara, Sachithra Senanayake, Ajantha Mendis, Lasith Malinga.

Hope to convince Kumble on DRS: ICC

Written By Unknown on Jumat, 21 Maret 2014 | 21.24

MIRPUR: The BCCI might be adamant in its opposition to the Decision Review System but ICC CEO Dave Richardson says the world body is hopeful of changing the Indian stand by first convincing ICC Cricket Committee chief Anil Kumble about the controversial innovation.

"Can Kumble convince the BCCI? First of all, we must convince Mr. Kumble. I'm more worried about them taking part in the debate rather than just sitting outside refusing to even talk about it," the ICC chief executive said during a media interaction on Friday.

"At the moment, Anil Kumble chairs the ICC cricket committee. He's a member of a working group set up to specifically review DRS and how technology is going to be used in the future. I don't want to put a time limit on it," he added.

He further added, "India hasn't accepted the DRS. How long would it take to convince BCCI? Your guess is as good as mine. I don't think we should limit ourselves to a certain time. BCCI will make up their mind in due course. All that we need to make sure is that they're at least privy to the latest information so that they understand the quality of the technology that is available."

Richardson is also confident that BCCI will play a more active role in the governance of the parent body, now that N Srinivasan is set to take over as the chairman of the ICC board in June.

"As the CEO of the organisation which he (Srinivasan) chairs, I will be having regular meetings with him. What I like about the position is that for the first time, the BCCI will be very much part of the governance structure, playing a full role in developing the strategy going forward. So I am looking forward to working with the BCCI," he said.

Richardson is happy that BCCI is taking up the leadership role in the development process of the ICC.

"Their (BCCI) approach was always to sit on the outside, not to partake in developing strategy. They left that to the other people. Now for the first time, they have taken the responsibility on their shoulders to lead in developing the strategy," he said.

Richardson will be happy if all the member organisations take full part in the strategy making procedure.

Richardson in a roundabout manner did express his concern about the leadership in Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) with a Najam Sethi now back in saddle in place of Zaka Ashraf.

He feels that at times, it becomes difficult if representatives of the member nations don't do their homework.

"The ICC being a members' organisation, it is incumbent on each and every member who sits on the Board to do his best to contribute to the good of the sport -- to understand the issues, to come to meetings having read the papers and to fully participate in the decision-making processes. And that applies to all member countries, not only Pakistan."

T20 WC: Spinners give India command

NEW DELHI: Amit Mishra removed Ahmed Shehzad just after Ravindra Jadeja got rid of Mohammad Hafeez to put Pakistan in trouble in the World T20 opener at Mirpur.

Scorecard

Jadeja struck in the eighth over to get Hafeez (15) caught by Bhuvneshwar Kumar at deep cover at the score of 44.

Before Pakistan could recover, Mishra gave them third blow by ending Shehzad's challenge in the next over, with the scorecard reading 47. The opener scored 22 in 17 balls.

Earlier, India struck in the second over as a brilliant throw by Bhuvneshwar Kumar saw Pakistan opener Kamran Akmal (8) walking back to pavilion after skipper MS Dhoni elected to bowl.

Trying a leg bye, Akmal was a long way down and Bhuvneshwar had plenty of time to take aim.

India have decided to go with three spinners, and have Yuvraj Singh, Rohit Sharma and Suresh Raina who capable of bowling a few overs spin each.

While form favours Pakistan even though they were battered by South Africa in a warm-up game last evening, history would be on India's side as they have never lost to their arch-rivals on all three meetings of the previous editions of World T20.

The Pakistan national team has played more T20 Internationals than its Indian counterparts, who last played an official T20 International against Australia in October last year.

Teams:

India: Rohit Sharma, Shikhar Dhawan, Suresh Raina, Yuvraj Singh, Virat Kohli, MS Dhoni(c), R Ashwin, Ravindra Jadeja, Amit Mishra, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Mohammed Shami

Pakistan: Ahmed Shehzad, Kamran Akmal, Mohammad Hafeez(c), Umar Akmal, Shoaib Malik, Sohaib Maqsood, Shahid Afridi, Bilawal Bhatti, Umar Gul, Saeed Ajmal, Junaid Khan

Hafeez, Pakistan staff at loggerheads?

Written By Unknown on Kamis, 20 Maret 2014 | 21.24

KARACHI: Trouble seems to be brewing in the Pakistan cricket team in the ongoing World Twenty20 Championships in Bangladesh with speculation rife of differences between skipper Mohammed Hafeez and the team management.

There are reports that Hafeez is not seeing eye to eye with the team management which includes head coach Moin Khan, cricket consultant Zaheer Abbas and manager Zakir Khan on a number of issues within the team specially on selection matters.

"It is not a good sign for Pakistan cricket that such rumours are even circulating before the start of our campaign in a world event. I just hope they are not true but definitely I would like to see the Pakistan cricket Board step-in and talk to all the main stakeholders in the team so that the team can focus on winning the tournament," former head coach and chief selector Mohsin Khan said.

Rumours started circulating after Hafeez made some caustic comments about the head coach and cricket consultant referring to their lack of experience in modern cricket and how the sport had changed in the last couple of years.

Similar rumours had also circulated when the team returned from the Asia Cup.

"Yes there are indications that Moin, Zaheer and the fielding coach Shoaib Muhammad in particular feel that Pakistan needs a new captain for future assignments and the names of Shahid Afridi and Younis Khan are being taken frequently now," one source close to the team said.

There are question-marks over whether Hafeez will be able to sustain the pressure of playing India in Friday's high-pressure tournament-opener.

Hafeez was captain when Pakistan lost to India in the last World T20 Cup in Sri Lanka in 2012.

"Definitely if you compare Hafeez with Mahendra Singh Dhoni than you can see a visible difference but the thing in his favour is that he is a senior player and an ideal all-rounder for T20 format," former cricketer Basit Ali said.

Interestingly, neither Afridi nor Younis have made any attempts to reject talk about them being candidates for the captaincy and both have said if such a situation arises, they will give it a serious thought.

Pakistan won the 2009 World Twenty20 under Younis while Afridi led them to the semifinals of the event in 2010.

India set for stern test against Pakistan

MIRPUR: Battered and bruised in the first quarter of 2014, India will aim to take fresh guard when they open their World Twenty20 campaign against traditional foes Pakistan on Friday in what promises to be a cracker of a contest.

While form favours Pakistan even though they were battered by South Africa in a warm-up game on Wednesday, history would be on India's side as they have never lost to their arch-rivals on all three meetings of the previous editions of World T20.

The Pakistan national team has played more T20 Internationals than its Indian counterparts, who last played an official T20 International against Australia in October last year.

There will be some great inner battle within the main contest. Shahid Afridi's pyrotechnics against Ravichandran Ashwin's variations, Umar Gul's pace against Virat Kohli's bravado, Saeed Ajmal's guile against Mahendra Singh Dhoni's flair.

But then, cricket is a fickle game and India have not had a great run this year so far. Mahendra Singh Dhoni's side has won only two official international matches this year having beaten Bangladesh and Afghanistan in the Asia Cup last month.

They have lost to all major teams like Pakistan, Sri Lanka and New Zealand.

They even lost to Sri Lanka in the first warm-up game before beating England convincingly by 20 runs in the final warm-up tie to somewhat redeem themselves.

While a victory acts as a morale booster after having inculcated the habit of losing, it would be a completely different ball-game when the 'Men In Blue' take the field against Mohammed Hafeez's men.

It is impossible to think that Afridi's last-over exploits wouldn't play on the Indian cricketers' minds ahead of the game although the format is completely different.

There would be immense pressure on both sides and one can expect a full house at the Sher-e-Bangla Stadium as people are going crazy for the tickets of the match.

For Dhoni, there are a number of issues that he needs to fret upon although Wednesday's England game was an indication as to what kind of line-up he is planning to field on Friday.

There are still some concerns with both batting and bowling. Rohit Sharma and Shikhar Dhawan's performance in shorter versions hasn't been good enough but the skipper is not known to tinker too much with his side.

Also the fact that Ajinkya Rahane, who can be an option as an opener having done the job for Rajasthan Royals in the IPL, is also not inspiring confidence of the highest order.

While critics have panned Dhoni for not being flexible with his team selection, he did try something 'Out of the Box' during the last edition in Sri Lanka where Irfan Pathan came in as an opener.

His run-a-ball 31 was one of the primary reasons that India lost to Australia and were subsequently knocked out of the tournament. Dhoni has never really experimented big time after that.

A good start is always crucial as it helps to seize the initiative early on in the match. Both Rohit and Dhawan would be aware that a couple of defeats could mean end of the road for India in this edition.

The relief for the skipper would be his mainstay Virat Kohli's form. The team's No 1 batsman looked in great touch against England as he smashed an unbeaten 73 off only 47 balls.

Dhoni's trusted lieutenant Suresh Raina is also showing signs of getting back his touch which had deserted him for the better part of the last season.

A 30-odd against Sri Lanka and a 31-ball-54 against England in two practice games would certain do his confidence a world of good.

Yuvraj Singh's scratchy form continued as he looked good against the Sri Lankan spinners during the first warm-up game while he played a poor shot in the next game.

However, with four man-of-the-match awards in India's last five official T20 Internationals, Yuvraj is a force to reckon with in this format as he can take the game at any point of time.

Dhoni himself is coming back from injury but he looked in good touch during his 14-ball-21 against England. The skipper's form will be crucial to India's future in the tournament.

The bowling is a worrying factor for the Indian team. Ravichandran Ashwin's form in the run-up to the tournament has been good with economical spells against both Sri Lanka and England.

Ravindra Jadeja also had a decent outing with the ball against England. His terrific fielding and improved batting at No 8 makes him an automatic choice.

But Amit Mishra hasn't done too well in the practice games and with Yuvraj, Raina, Rohit in the team, there is a doubt whether a third specialist spinner would fit into the scheme of things.

But it will be a choice between Bhuvneshwar Kumar and Varun Aaron as Mohammed Shami is a certainty in the playing XI unless he has a niggle.

Bhuvneshwar's pace has been like cannon fodder for the batsmen and has been easy pickings for batsmen of all teams. Aaron's pace is impressive but he has very little variations which can be a worry for captain during the death overs.

Pakistan were all-out for 71 in their last warm-up game against South Africa but that had more to do with trying to test the batsmen by changing the order.

While Ahmed Shehzad, skipper Hafeez, and the Akmal brothers -- Kamran and Umar -- will be itching to have a go at India, the two fear factors for Dhoni's men will be none other than Afridi and Ajmal.

Ajmal's four overs with the kind of variations he possesses can create a lot of trouble for Indian batsmen. Afridi on the other hand can change the complexion of the game with both bat and ball.

In Umar Gul and Sohail Tanveer, they have a more than capable right-left bowling combination, who are never easy to get away.

In all, brace up for what is going to be a riveting Friday blockbuster.

Teams (from):

India: Mahendra Singh Dhoni (Capt.), Varun Aaron, Stuart Binny, Shikhar Dhawan, Ravindra Jadeja, Virat Kohli, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Amit Mishra, Ajinkya Rahane, Ravichandran Ashwin, Suresh Raina, Mohammad Shami, Mohit Sharma, Rohit Sharma, Yuvraj Singh.

Pakistan: Mohammad Hafeez (Capt.), Ahmed Shehzad, Bilawal Bhatti, Junaid Khan, Kamran Akmal, Saeed Ajmal, Shahid Afridi, Sharjeel Khan, Shoaib Malik, Sohaib Maqsood, Sohail Tanvir, Mohammad Talha, Umar Akmal, Umar Gul, Zulfiqar Babar.

Bowling is an area of concern: Dhoni

MIRPUR: Underlining his bowling concerns, India skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni today said they need to bowl well at the death and hoped that batsmen would give the bowlers more than the par score on board.

India will begin their ICC World T20 campaign against arch-rivals Pakistan here tomorrow.

"Bowling is an area of concern compared to batting. Getting off to a good start is important as it will help us get 10 to 15 runs more than the par-score. Our aim will be to do well in death bowling and also bat well and we will have a good chance (in the tournament)," Dhoni said on the eve of the opening group league match tomorrow.

He said the likes Mohammed Shami and Bhuvneshwar have not played a lot of T20 Internationals but the IPL experience will certainly come in handy for them.

"Agreed they haven't played a lot of T20 International cricket but the experience in IPL will help them a lot. We would want the bowlers to get one or two wickets with the new ball, their job will be much easier," Dhoni said.

While he was happy about Yuvraj Singh and Suresh Raina's performance, he was non-committal on sending Ajinkya Rahane up the order.

"Overall, we have achieved a lot during the two practice games. The idea was to give the guys some fair time in the middle. Yuvi and Raina contributed in bowling."

About Rahane opening, he said, "That's under consideration. You will have to wait and watch."

The skipper agreed that presence of a few genuine all-rounders in the Pakistan team would help the rivals.

"Playing proper all-rounders always adds to the strength of a side. If you have players who are equally capable with bat and ball, one can play more than five bowlers and still have the same batting strength," the Indian captain opined.

Among the rival bowlers, pacer Umar Gul and wily spinner Saeed Ajmal came in for special praise from the Indian captain.

"Umar Gul is a fantastic bowler. I remember during the 2007 ICC World T20, he would be introduced in the 11th or 12th over and bowl till the end. Having said that, they have other fast bowlers also, who are equally dangerous."

Dhoni conceded that it is difficult to score freely against mystery spinner Saeed Ajmal.

"Ajmal is a bowler against whom you can never score freely. It's also the manner how they have used him (Ajmal) to stop batsmen from scoring runs in the slog overs. They gave him an over in the first six (Powerplay) and then couple of overs in the middle. If you see on an average, all countries have had difficulties in facing Ajmal," Dhoni explained.

Having been clubbed with Pakistan, West Indies and Australia in the group makes an even tougher challenge and the skipper wants to win each and every game in order to ensure a smooth passage to the last four.

"We have to do well in each and every match. If you look at the last World T20 in Sri Lanka, we lost one match (vs Australia) and were knocked out of the tournament. It is a tough group. Also you have to realize that in this format, the difference between a good team and a not so good team is very less. I believe even they have the talent to upset big sides. It depends on what kind of cricket you play on that particular day," he added.

However the captain said that Afridi's innings in the Asia Cup will have a very little bearing on tomorrow match.

"No," was a mono-syllabic reply to the question on Afridi.

When someone queried as to what exactly he was doing when Afridi hit the winning six off Ashwin's bowling, Dhoni smiled and replied, "I was watching (the match) on television. Initially, I thought that the ball was going to the fielder but then I saw that it went for a six. It was an exciting match."

In a roundabout manner, a scribe queried if it's difficult for him to focus on his game considering what all is happening around him, he smilingly counter-questioned, "What all is happening around me? You tell me! Well, there's plenty that goes around you and irrespective of that you have to focus on your job. These things are a part and parcel of the game," he said.

'Want Afridi to repeat Asia Cup show'

MIRPUR: Pakistan's T20 captain Mohammed Hafeez is not bothered about the fact that they have never beaten India in World Twenty20 but he has a lot of expectations from Shahid Afridi as he wants the dashing all-rounder to yet again put up a match-winning performance against arch-rivals tomorrow.

It was on the back Afridi's whirwind knock that Pakistan had beaten India in the Asia Cup.

"We would always want Afridi to come lower down the order and finish the game for us. It's important that he (Afridi) is in good form and frame of mind. We want him to repeat the performance of the Asia Cup match against India," skipper Hafeez said at the pre-match media conference here today.

While Ravichandran Ashwin is slowly regaining some form and will be itching for revenge, Hafeez is confident that eldest statesman of his side is well prepared to face him.

"Each and every individual does his homework," was his reply.

Pakistan have never won against India in three ICC World T20 encounters but Hafeez is hardly bothered about "history".

"History does not really bother us. Irrespective of whether it is good or bad, it is history. All days are not great days. You should be ready for the next day," Pakistan captain brushed aside the statistical factor.

The skipper also begged to differ from team's batting consultant Zaheer Abbas' logic that Dhoni's absence was a big factor during Asia Cup and his presence will make a difference.

"I respect Zaheer bhai's statement and he has his own logic. Dhoni has been a great captain and has led the team well in the last five or six years. But if you are prepared well then you can overcome any challenge."

Hafeez is also of the opinion that having all-rounders like Afridi and veteran Shoaib Malik will help them a lot.

"We do believe that having all-rounders helps. We have all-rounders like Shoaib Malik, Afridi and Kamran Akmal, who is a wicketkeeper-batsman."

Indian haven't exactly done well in the Powerplay overs but the Pakistan captain refused to read into it.

"Statistics like these can help but on the day, you need to execute your plans. It also helps that we have played a lot of matches in Bangladesh. We have won the Asia Cup over here and are aware about the conditions. But similarly, the Indian team also has a lot of experience in these conditions," he explained.

While there were reports of rift between Hafeez and some other members of the team management, the skipper rubbished the rumours. "Any decision that we take is a team decision. We have one aim and that is to win."

The skipper was ecstatic about how senior speedster Umar Gul has worked on his fitness and is looking sharp as ever.

"It has been an outstanding comeback by Umar Gul. He has done a lot of hardwork to get his rhythm back. He is our No 1 pacer."

Hafeez is confident that youngsters such as Ahmed Shehzad and Umar Akmal will play for Pakistan for a long time as they have the talent to be consistently successful.

"Umar and Shehzad have played a lot of cricket together from the U-19 days. There are four five boys who are really talented. There's Umar Amin, Sohaib Maqsood who are also very talented and will only get better day by day."

Pakistan were bundled out for 71 in the final warm-up game against South Africa in Fatullah, yesterday but Hafeez is not really worried about the performance.

"Some players needed to be given a chance," was his answer. The skipper is also of the opinion that best XI players should play and that's the reason he is ready to do away with Sharjeel Khan-Ahmed Shehzad opening combination after Kamran Akmal scored 52 runs in the first warm-up game against New Zealand.

"I have always believed that the form players should play."

UAE to host 20 matches in IPL first leg

Written By Unknown on Rabu, 19 Maret 2014 | 21.25

CHENNAI: The United Arab Emirates was on Wednesday awarded the hosting rights of 20 matches in the IPL's first leg with defending champions Mumbai Indians opening the tournament by squaring off against Kolkata Knight Riders on April 16 in Abu Dhabi.

The IPL Governing Council announced the schedule for the first phase of the tournament after a meeting here.

The UAE leg of the IPL, a part of which has been shifted out of the country due to general elections, will wind up on April 30 with Mumbai facing Sunrisers Hyderabad in Dubai.

"The opening match on April 16 will be played in Abu Dhabi between @mipaltan and @KKRiders (8 pm IST/6:30 pm local)," the IPL organisers announced in a series of tweets.

"20 matches will be played in 3 stadiums: Sheikh Zayed Stadium- Abu Dhabi, Sharjah CA Stadium, Dubai International Cricket Stadium #PepsiIPL.

"The IPL GC has confirmed that the first phase of the #PepsiIPL 2014 season matches will be played in the UAE from April 16-30," another tweet said.

The second leg of the tournament has been tentatively kept for Bangladesh but could be held in India between May 1-12 if the government agrees to provide security to the event.

The IPL has been refused security by the government as its schedule is clashing with the general elections, scheduled to be held in nine phases from April 7 to May 12.

The last leg of the IPL from May 13, including the play-offs and the final slated for June 1, will be held in India.

This is the second time the event has had to be forced out of the country due to elections. In 2009, the entire tournament had to be shifted to South Africa, a country which was in contention to host the event even this time.

Due to the lesser number of teams, the duration of the league has also been shortened this time to 47 days and 60 matches -- much less than the 76 games played last season which was spread over 54 days.

The schedule of the second and third phase of the tournament will be released later.
