Knight Riders extend win streak to 13

Written By Unknown on Selasa, 30 September 2014 | 21.25

HYDERABAD: There was no experimentation with the team despite it having already qualified for the semifinals but Gautam Gambhir chose do to something differently.

After having successfully chased down targets in three previous games, the Kolkata Knight Riders' skipper, who is leading for the 100th time in T20s, chose to bat first in what was a dead rubber against the winless Dolphins in their last Group A match of the Oppo CLT20 on Monday night.

The result, however, remained the same. The Knight Riders extended their win streak to 13 with a 36-run win and will take on Hurricane Hobarts in the semis on Thursday.

Chasing 188 for a win, the Dolphins, who had got the same number of runs against Chennai Super Kings while chasing 243, tried their best but failed to put the hosts under pressure. However, the visitors provided the sparse crowd some entertainment.

Earlier, opener Robin Uthappa made the most of the opportunity to bat first as he stroked his way to an unbeaten 85 (55 balls, 13x4) and fellow Karnataka mate Manish Pandey provided a lot of fireworks at the end of the innings to help the Knight Riders run up a formidable 187 for two. That laid the foundation for a grand win.

Brief Scores:

Kolkata Knight Riders 187-2 in 20 overs (Robin Uthappa 85 not out, Manish Pandey 76 not out) beat Dolphins 151-8 in 20 overs (Andile Phehlukwayo 37, Morne van Wyk 34; Sunil Narine 3-33) by 36 runs.

MCA to revisit Sachin's 15-a-side idea

MUMBAI: Sachin Tendulkar doesn't seem to be in a mood to give up on his innovative idea of having 15-a-side games at the inter-school and collegiate level despite the Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA) having rejected it.

TOI has learnt that Tendulkar, in a bid to make his idea see the light of the day, recently requested MCA president and NCP supremo Sharad Pawar to ask the association have another serious look on the concept.

Currently busy with the Maharashtra assembly elections, Pawar has now called a Managing Committee (MC) meeting of the MCA on October 16, just a day after the polls will be conducted, to discuss the matter.

The novel idea, it has emerged, was rejected twice by the managing committee, and didn't find favour with the MCA's technical committee as well.

Justifying his panel's call, a member of the technical committee said: "Cricket is a team game, not an individual sport. According to Tendulkar's idea, every team can play up to 11 batsmen. With so many batsmen around, it is doubtful who amongst them would take the responsibility of carrying the team through."

Out-of-form Virat Kohli checks into NCA

BANGALORE: With the home series against West Indies looming, Virat Kohli seems keen on regaining batting form. The batting star arrived at the National Cricket Academy on Monday to train ahead of the series along with Shikhar Dhawan, Ambati Rayudu and pace bowlers Mohammad Shami and Ishant Sharma.

Kohli had a forgettable tour of England recently. In Tests, he made a mere 134 runs from ten innings. His poor run continued in the ODI's as he turned in poor scores of 0, 40, 1 and 13.

The 25-year-old spent a large part of his time batting at the nets as well as working on his fitness with the trainers. India will play five ODI's, a T20 and three Test matches against West Indies at home.

MCA's club adopted SRT's idea for 8 yrs

MUMBAI: This is ironic. While the Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA) rejected Sachin Tendulkar's innovative idea of 15-a-side games at the junior level before being forced to have a rethink at the insistence of president Sharad Pawar, it has allowed a club in the city, affiliated with it, to run three of its tournaments on similar lines on an 'experimental basis.' The Sports Promotion Group, which runs the SPG Academy at Dadar's famed Shivaji Park, has been organizing 14-a-side tournaments for the past eight years.

"We organise three events - SPG Group cricket academy inter-collegiate, inter-corporate and inter-club tournaments, every year, and the MCA has been kind to allow us to implement this idea every time," the club's secretary, Sangam Lad, told TOI on Monday.

"The games in these tournaments are of 40 overs-a-side nature, with the fielding captain getting two opportunities during the innings to rotate players - at the 15-over and 30-over mark. "The captain can choose how many players he wants to 'rotate.' Each bowler is allowed not more than six overs, which means that at least seven bowlers have to be played. The batting team can field any 11 batsmen out of the 14. There is no need to declare the line-up before a game," said Lad.

This tournament has seen the participation of quite a few Ranji-level players like Aditya Tare, Suryakumar Yadav, Vishal Dabholkar and Siddhesh Lad.

"The benefits of this concept are many-fold. It allows maximum players to take part in the game and widens the talent pool. Some times, parents even force their kid to leave playing cricket if he doesn't find a spot in the first XI. That can be disheartening," felt Lad. "We must try Tendulkar's idea in local cricket. It will enable all the budding cricketers an opportunity to show their talent," he added.

Interestingly, as many as seven bowlers can bowl in Mumbai's local limited overs games, which are of 45 overs-side duration each. Five bowlers are allowed to bowl a maximum of six overs, and two of them can deliver five.

CLT20: Kings XI maintain winning run

Written By Unknown on Senin, 29 September 2014 | 21.24

MOHALI: Kings XI Punjab, who had already qualified for the semifinals, kept their slate clean defeating the Cape Cobras by seven wickets in their last league match of the Oppo CLT20 at the PCA stadium on Sunday.

The emphatic victory made it four-wins-out-of-four for the Punjab side and they now travel to Hyderabad to play either Chennai Super Kings or Lahore Lions in the last-four stage.

Making light work of a 136-run target, Kings XI were home and dry with nearly two overs to spare. Punjab openers Manan Vohra and Virender Sehwag followed talismanic Glenn Maxwell all hit numerically similar 23-run knocks during the chase.

The anchor of the innings, though, was wicket-keeper Wriddhiman Saha (42 not out off 35b; 4x4, 1x6), who made sure that Kings XI reach the victory mark without further hiccups.

Earlier, the Cobras frittered away a great start by openers Hashim Amla and Richard Levi, who put on 60 runs off just six overs. At one point of time, the South African team was well on course for the 200-run mark.

But, Kings XI leg-spinner Karanveer Singh lured Amla (40 off 22b; 7x4, 1x6) into a false shot, and David Miller held on to an easy catch at long on.

Brief scores:

Cape Cobras 135 in 18.3 ovs (Levi 42, Amla 40; Anureet 3/12, Akshar Patel 3/15) lost to Kings XI Punjab 139/3 in 18.1 ovs (Saha 42 n.o., Vohra 23)

Hobart are first non-IPL team in last four stage

Hobart Hurricanes may well end up as the only non-IPL team in the semifinals. They joined Kings XI Punjab in the penultimate round from Group B, when they cantered to a six-wicket win over Barbados Tridents in a low-scoring match.

The Tridents batting failed to rise to the occasion as they seemed to be still smarting from the Super Over defeat against Cape Cobras on Friday. They barely managed 113, after being asked to bat first.

Hurricanes too found the going tough as they lost a few early wickets. At 71/4 in 13 overs, it looked like a close affair. But Pakistan all-rounder Shoaib Malik, so used to playing on such wickets, kept one end up and in company of Jonathan Wells, took the team to victory with 10 balls to spare.

Brief Scores:

Barbados Tridents 113 in 19.4 ovs (Carter 42; Doherty 4/27, Hilfenhaus 2/14, Bollinger 2/27) lost to Hobart Hurricanes 117/4 in 18.2 ovs (Malik 39 n.o., Wells 23 n.o.)

Dhoni, Jadeja star in Super Kings win

BANGALORE: It took a while to get there and it took some doing by skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni and Ravindra Jadeja as Chennai Super Kings just about managed to take their score into the realm of respectability in their Oppo Champions League Twenty20 clash against Perth Scorchers at M Chinnaswamy stadium on Saturday.

On a night when the Chennai side appeared strangely determined to underwhelm the 20,000 spectators - most of them waving CSK flags - Dhoni's 16-ball 35, a cameo masterpiece that included four sixes, took the men in yellow to 155/6 in 20 overs.

In the process, Dhoni went past 4,000 career runs in T20s, but whether he should have looked to add to his impressive tally of 4,012 remained a talking point as he came in to bat as low as No. 7.

Perth Scorchers couldn't really get a partnership going and were all out of for 142-7.

Lions ride on Akmal's blitz

Pakistan's wicketkeeper-batsman Umar Akmal produced a mature batting display in a testing situation to help Lahore Lions seal a 16-run win in their Champions League Twenty20 Group A clash against South Africa's Nashua Dolphins at the M Chinnaswamy stadium here on Saturday.

Akmal's unbeaten 73 (45b, 5x4, 5x6) helped Lions recover from 34/4 in the eighth over to an eventual match-winning total of 164/5 in 20 overs. In reply, Morne van Wyk's winless Dolphins managed 148/9, despite a late fightback from all-rounder Robert Frylinck (63 n.o; 27b, 4x4, 6x6).

Brief scores:

Chennai Super Kings 155-6 (Jadeja 44, Dhoni 35) beat Perth Scorchers 142-7 (Coulter-Nile 30; Ashwin 3-20) by 13 runs; Lahore Lions 164 for 5 (U Akmal 73*, Nasim 43, Frylinck 3-22) beat Dolphins 148 for 9 (Frylinck 63*, Hafeez 2-18) by 16 runs

KXIP lord over Knights, enter semis

Written By Unknown on Minggu, 28 September 2014 | 21.24

MOHALI: The PCA stadium for Friday night's doubleheader was not even half-full. But the ones who attended sure got their money's worth. First, they witnessed a heart-stopping tied match between Cape Cobras and Barbados Tridents, which the former ultimately won in the Super Over.

Then the crowd was treated to some delightful display of power hitting by the Kings XI Punjab batsmen. Put in to bat, the home team ran up the third-highest total - 215/5 - in CLT20 history .

The task of attaining the daunting target proved a mountain to climb for Northern Knights and they fell 120 runs short of the target.

With their third win in as many matches, KXIP ensured a berth in the semifinals from Group B, leaving the other four teams to fight it out for second spot.

Hobart Hurricanes, who have won two of their three games and play Barbados Tridents here on Sunday afternoon, are now best placed to join KXIP in the semifinals, to be played in Hyderabad on October 2.

Cobras sting Tridents in thrilling Super Over

Jonathan Carter registered not only his maiden century on Friday, but also the first-ever by a Barbados Tridents batsman in T20 cricket.

But his effort was not enough for his team as they lost their Oppo CL T20 match against Cape Cobras by one run in the Super Over after the teams ended with scores tied at 174 runs each.

After hammering an unbeaten 111, Carter had to come out to bat again in the Super Over after Cobras had managed just 11 runs in their Super Over. It was a master move by the Cobras to ask offspinner Sybrand Engelbrecht to bowl.

Shastri in full-time role for World Cup

Written By Unknown on Sabtu, 27 September 2014 | 21.24

CHENNAI: India will go into the 2015 World Cup under the stewardship of Ravi Shastri. The former Indian captain's performance as the coaching director in England was appreciated by the BCCI and it was decided that he will stay on as team director till the World Cup.

"We had meetings with him and he was happy to carry on till the World Cup," BCCI secretary Sanjay Patel said coming out of the BCCI working committee meeting.

Shastri will be with the team during the home series against West Indies as well, even though Patel said that Shastri might not be working full-time during the home series or the fourTest series in Australia.

"We have left that bit open. He will work as per his availability during the Australia Test series. But he will be with the team 24x7 from the tri-series in Australia and will continue till the World Cup," Patel said.

Under-fire coach Duncan Fletcher too has been retained following positive reports by the team and Shastri. Skipper MS Dhoni too has openly backed Fletcher and the BCCI, despite initial reservations about the coach, preferred to continue with the 67year-old coach.

"There was never any doubt about his knowledge. The communication skills sometimes become an area of concern but with an Indian support staff around, it shouldn't be a problem," an official added.

The three Indian coaches - Sanjay Bangar, Bharath Arun and R Sridhar - have been retained and they will be with the team from the West Indies series onwards. The two foreign coaches, Joe Dawes and Trevor Penney have been asked to serve out their contract at the National Cricket Academy.

BCCI looks to formalize Srini's return

Written By Unknown on Jumat, 26 September 2014 | 21.24

CHENNAI: N Srinivasan won't be there in person but he will once again be the centre of attraction as the Indian cricket board's (BCCI) working committee meets on Friday.

The support for the Tamil Nadu strongman is beyond doubt and the 24-member body of the board will take all possible measures to make it a smooth return for Srinivasan at the helm.

The Justice Mudgal committee, which is probing the BCCI spot-fixing scandal, has been given a deadline till Nov 2 by SC and Srinivasan can only come back to power if he is given a clean chit by the panel.

The BCCI, therefore, will formally propose to postpone the date of the AGM after the report is submitted. As per the BCCI constitution, the AGM was supposed to take place by Sept 30 but BCCI members argued that the financial documents can only be signed by the democratically elected president Srinivasan and not the interim boss Shivlal Yadav .

East Zone members hold the key to Srinivasan's return to power because it's the East's term to propose and second the name of the president for the new term.

Cricket Association of Bengal (CAB) and National Cricket Club (NCC) are in the working committee but interestingly all the eastern units have been invited to be present in the Friday gathering.

The six units had already pledged their support for Srinivasan verbally in an informal meeting of the members on Sept 7 and the issue might be formalized on the sidelines of the working committee meeting.

A few cricket issues will also be discussed, with Ravi Shastri's appointment as the team director being prime on the agenda. The BCCI wants to use him selectively till the World Cup and it's understood that the members will give the go-ahead.

Shastri's report on the Indian team during the ODIs in England will also be discussed and a on the basis of that report a decision on the coaching staff will be taken.

The two foreign coaches, Trevor Penney and Joe Dawes will be asked to serve out their contract at the National Cricket Academy in Bangalore. Duncan Fletcher, though, will stay with the team as the coach till the end of the World Cup.

Amol Muzumdar announces retirement

MUMBAI: Throughout his illustrious First Class career that lasted over two decades, former Mumbai skipper Amol Muzumdar depended heavily on timing to amass 11,167 runs. Ironically for Muzumdar, it was timing that denied him a place in the national team.

His career coincided with those of four middle-order stalwarts of Indian cricket. Sourav Ganguly, Sachin Tendulkar, VVS Laxman and Rahul Dravid were all Amol's contemporaries when he was trying to break into the Indian team.

All of them had played junior cricket together, but these four -Ganguly, Tendulkar, Laxman and Dravid -not only managed to break into the national setup, they went on to become legends in their own right.

Muzumdar, who drew the curtains on his first class career on Thursday , though, felt that he was blessed to be a part of that era.

"I tried very hard to break into the Indian team. But then we had people like Sachin, Sourav, VVS and Dravid in the team. They have all played around 125 Tests individually. So while I will be disappointed that I couldn't make the cut, I am extremely grateful to be a part of that golden era of Indian cricket," Muzumdar said.

Waiting in the wings for long periods can be frustrating at times. How did Muzumdar cope with it? "I was always hopeful. I kept scoring runs year after year in the hope of breaking into the Indian team. That kept me going. I gave up around 2003. I kept scoring, but I wasn't even in the India 'A' scheme of things," Muzumdar said candidly.

The wiry batsman made his Mumbai debut in the 199394 season against Haryana and showed his class with a mammoth 260 in the pre-quarterfinal game. He played 16 seasons for Mumbai after his memorable debut and scored heavily each season. The only real slump he suffered was in the 2002-2003 season where he simply couldn't score. He revealed that he was about to hang up his boots and was exploring other career options, but his father played his part, quite subtly.

"I had decided enough was enough. I was not getting runs, I was clueless as to where my next run would come from and then I took a decision to call it quits. But I had already signed up to play league cricket in England. So my father suggested that since I had committed to the club, I should fulfil it and then take a final call," Muzumdar recalled.

He narrated an interesting anecdote about how he recovered his form and confidence. "As a kid, I used to tie a ball to a rope and hit the ball around 500 times a day. My father had very smartly slipped the ball inside my bag when I left for England. While unpacking, I saw a ball tied to a rope. So, I decided to restart that drill of hitting balls. I started to knock the ball in my room. Much to my astonishment, I started getting runs. After returning from England, I was certain that I didn't want to quit. I played for Mumbai and was back among runs too," he said.

After representing Mumbai for 16 long years, Muzumdar decided to play for other states. Not because he was disgruntled with the set up here, but to give something back to the game. "I moved to Assam and then to Andhra because I was confident that I could be of help to youngsters. In my very first season with Assam, we qualified for the Elite Division for the first time ever. I then went to Andhra for precisely the same reason," he insisted.

Muzumdar, who is batting consultant to The Netherlands' national cricket team, said that he will focus on coaching and media work.

BCCI looks to formalize Srini's return

CLT20: Super Kings prevail in run feast

Written By Unknown on Kamis, 25 September 2014 | 21.24

BANGALORE: Dolphins' top-order batsmen went for broke but the scorching pace set earlier by Chennai Super Kings' Suresh Raina, in particular, Brendon McCullum, Ravindra Jadeja and Faf du Pleissis kept the key CLT20 league match beyond their reach at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium on Monday.

Dolphins, chasing a stupendous target of 243, had to throw everything at the opponents if they had to achieve the victory.

The magnitude of the chase demanded that their batsmen had to be lucky all the time. But brave as their top order batsmen Cameroon Delport (34; 9b) and Cody Chetty (38; 28b) were, fortune simply did not favour them.

They lost wickets at regular intervals to be bowled out for 188 and thereby went down by 54 runs.

It was their second successive loss in the tournament while home team Chennai Super Kings are back in the reckoning for a shot at a spot in the last four.

The match was all about the amazing pyrotechnics of the left handed Raina (90; 43b, 4x4, 8x6). He was not the one to let go of a superb opportunity to make use of a great batting track, hemmed in as it were by short boundaries.

Right through his stay he looked in pristine touch and rarely ever needed to muscle his way through the Dolphins' bowling. Instead, he timed the ball gloriously and sixes and fours flowed off the meat of his bat to all sections of the ground.

With opener Brendon McCullum (49; 29b, 5x4, 3x6), he took the bowling by the scruff of the neck as CSK raced to register the fastest 100 (54 balls) in CLT20 history.

The second-wicket pair made a mockery of Dolphins tactical mistake of asking them to take first strike and two other batsman, Faf du Plessis (30; 19b, 3x4, 1x6) and Ravindra Jadeja (40 n.o; 14b, 3x4, 3x6) too drove home the advantage to the unbridled joy of a good crowd.

About the only thing that went right for the Dolphins was when their ploy of opening the bowling with left-arm spinner Keshav Maharaj paid off. He had Dwayne Smith caught in the deep off the fifth ball.

CLT20: Knight Riders juggernaut rolls on

HYDERABAD: Perth Scorchers' bid to stop the Kolkata Knight Riders juggernaut failed to bear fruit as the 'hosts' extended their winning streak to 12 with a close three-wicket win in their Group A match of the CLT20 on Wednesday.

Electing to bat after skipper Adam Voges won the toss, Perth Scorchers were off to a bright start with Voges and Craig Simmons (39; 30b, 6x4, 1x6) adding 68 for the first wicket, the best opening partnership posted by any side against the Knight Riders in 19 T20 matches this year.

But once chinaman Kuldeep Yadav got rid of Simmons, KKR spun their way back into the game. Kuldeep and then Sunil Narine had the Scorchers on a tight leash and restricted them to 151 for seven despite Voges scoring an unbeaten 52ball 71 (8x4, 1x6).

The Scorchers, however, seemed determined to make a fight of the game as their new ball pair of Jason Behrendorff and Joel Paris struck two quick blows.

Paris had skipper Gautam Gambhir (2) caught by Ashton Turner and then Behrendorff had Jacques Kallis (6) caught by Simmons to reduce the Knight Riders to 13 for two.

Robin Uthappa (23; 18b, 4x4) and then Manish Pandey (24; 23b, 3x4) tried to revive the innings but the Scorchers pacers were in no mood to relent.

Ryan ten Doeschate too perished while trying to force the pace.

At 87 for five, the Knight Riders were in trouble but Suryakumar Yadav had other ideas.

CLT20: Blizzard powers Hurricanes win

Written By Unknown on Rabu, 24 September 2014 | 21.24

HYDERABAD: Making the most of the largesse of the Cape Cobra fielders, Aiden Blizzard powered Hobart Hurricanes to a six-wicket win in their Group B match of the CLT20 on Sunday.

Blizzard was dropped by Aviwe Mgijima when he was on 36 off skipper Justin Ontong. The southpaw, who had another reprieve when he was caught off a no-ball on 52, punished the Cobras to help the Hurricanes post their first win of the tournament as they made 186 for four in 19 overs.

Blizzard remained unbeaten on 78 off 48 balls with three fours and five sixes and Jonathan Wells was on 17. The duo shared an unbeaten 65-run stand for the fifth wicket with Blizzard scoring 45 of those.

Earlier, Cape Cobras got off to a brisk start but lost a few quick wickets. However, big hitting Richard Levi kept the momentum going with a typical quickfire 42 off 30 balls.

Later, the seventh-wicket pair of Robin Peterson and Vernon Philander hit some lusty blows to take the score to a competitive 184 for six.

Philander remained unconquered on 32 off 14 balls with five fours and a six, while Peterson was on 25 off 14 balls with two fours and a six.

CLT20: Blizzard powers Hurricanes win

CLT20: Super Kings prevail in run feast

CLT20: Knight Riders' magic run goes on

HYDERABAD: The much-awaited clash between Kolkata Knight Riders and Lahore Lions turned into a tame affair as the two-time IPL champions cantered to a four-wicket win in their second Group B match of the CLT20 tournament on Sunday.

KKR, who are on a roll, extended their winning streak to 11 matches the longest by an IPL team. Chasing 152, the 'home' team started off cautiously but once the openers got their bearing there was no stopping them. The Lions' bowling lacked bite and even their fielding was not up to the mark.

Skipper Gautam Gambhir made a welcome return to form as he stroked his way to a 47-ball 60 with eight hits to the fence as the Knight Riders reached 153 for six to take full points from the game and top the table.

The southpaw strung a 100-run stand for the opening wicket with Robin Uthappa off 75 balls to put his side on path of victory. Uthappa, who is returning from an injury, took time to settle down but once he got his eyes in, he took on the Lions. Uthappa struck four fours and two sixes in his 34-ball 46.

Though KKR needlessly lost a couple of wickets, they had enough firepower in their ranks to settle the issue without much ado.

Earlier, the Lions were caught in a spin trap as 'mystery man' Sunil Narine tricked the Pakistani side into submission.

Put into bat, the Lions failed to confront the challenge posed by Narine. Narine finished with figures of three for nine off four overs.

Wicketkeeper Umar Akmal spared the Lions' blushes with a 23-ball 40.

CLT20: Akshar, Miller help Kings XI win

Written By Unknown on Minggu, 21 September 2014 | 21.24

MOHALI: Southpaws David Miller and Akshar Patel got Kings XI Punjab out of jail in their Champions League T20 match against the Barbados Tridents at the PCA stadium on Saturday.

The duo added 47 runs in just 3.1 overs for the seventh wicket, helping KXIP win by 4 wickets, the home team's second consecutive win in the CLT20.

Coming together at 1316, Miller (46 not out, 34b, 3x4, 2x6) found an able ally in Patel (23 not out, 9b, 3x4, 1x6), who took 20 runs off the 19th over, which was bowled by Ravi Rampaul.

Miller finished it off in his typical 'in-the-arc, out-of--park' style, depositing the ball into the stands for a maximum.

It was the perfect T20 potboiler that went into the last ball of the match. Australian T20 champions Perth Scorchers needed 12 runs off the last two balls against South African T20 title-holders Dolphins.

Marsh steals the show and match

Scorchers' Mitchell Marsh pulled off the near-impossible task as he deposited Dolphins' death-over specialist Robbie Frylinck into the stands twice to win the game for his side. Marsh (40 not out off 26b; 3x4, 2x6) in the end, turned out the trump card for Perth.

Haryana to implement Tendulkar's idea

MUMBAI: After the defection of its players and coaches to other teams, it seems Mumbai cricket will now see even its ideas being used by other associations for their benefit.

A day after TOI reported that the MCA had rejected cricket legend Sachin Tendulkar's idea of having inter-school and inter-college games featuring 15 players in each side, the paper has learnt that the Haryana Cricket Association (HCA) is all set to implement this novel concept at its inter-district U-14 tournament next week.

According to sources, Sachin, while playing his final First Class game at Lahli last November, discussed this idea with HCA president and current BCCI treasurer Anirudh Chaudhary, who then decided to give it a try.

"I quite liked the idea, because it means that we will get to see more players in 'match conditions' at the junior level. This translates into a wider pool of cricketers to choose from when we select our state U-16 team," Chaudhary told TOI on Saturday.

"Also, at the U-14 and U-16 level, we can still experiment, because beyond it, we will have to go by the BCCI rules while conducting tournaments. And we have received a fabulous response to the idea," he added.

Sources close to Tendulkar said that the maestro was "passionate about the idea" and was "still positive about the MCA considering it."

Apart from throwing up a larger talent pool, this concept was essentially mooted by Tendulkar to give much needed opportunities to a budding cricketer, who may be left out of the XI due to various reasons. A spinner or a batsman, for example, may not get to play if the pitch aids seam bowling.

"In a 'normal' game, you may get two pacers. In this case, you may get to see as many as five seamers in action," Chaudhary observed.

During his felicitation function by the MCA in December last year, Tendulkar had pointed out how there is every chance of a talented kid being left out of a key game despite having travelled all the way from a far-flung area and not getting another chance for the rest of the year.

Interestingly, the Indian team employs Tendulkar's idea while playing tour games. While it results in the match losing its First Class or List 'A' status, it ensures maximum outing for bowlers and batsmen in the squad, which helps them to be better-prepared for the series.

In 2005, the International Cricket Council (ICC), had in fact, introduced the 'Super Sub' rule in ODIs, which was based on similar lines. Both the teams allowed an extra player each before the toss. The ICC, however, abandoned the experiment after 10 months.

Meanwhile, the HCA has decided to implement another novel idea for the U-14 tournament. In what must surely be a first of its kind for a competition of this level, it organised a 'central age verification' test, conducted by 'independent' medical experts, according to the 'TW3 method' - which involves the latest bone-testing technology to verify the exact age of a cricketer-on all the 380 junior players taking part in the tournament.

The HCA decided to make the players undergo these tests, which are normally conducted at the inter-state level, in a genuine attempt to eradicate age-fraud.

Virat fine after time with Sachin: Coach

Written By Unknown on Sabtu, 20 September 2014 | 21.24

NEW DELHI: Virat Kohli's decision to seek tips from Sachin Tendulkar in Mumbai is just a brief part of his overall training programme leading to the 2015 World Cup, according to his childhood coach Raj Kumar Sharma.

Sharma told TOI that Kohli had some time on his hands and wanted to get some technical inputs after an ordinary tour of England. And who better to seek those tips than Tendulkar?

"He (Kohli) is a very strong character. Technically, there is nothing really wrong as such. There might be a few minor adjustments. Even during the England tour, he was timing the ball well before James Anderson would get him out. It took six years for a bowler to work him out and Virat is keen to make sure he negates that," Sharma said.

"It's always better to get the guidance of a legend like Tendulkar. I can't tell you what he has told me after interacting with Sachin....but Virat is now in a good mental state and is under no pressure. He had come to my house after arriving from England and told me how he had planned his preparations. He said he would be going to meet Sachin for two-three days and come back and distribute his time between his family and practice," the coach added.

Sharma said Virat was relieved his slump had come before the World Cup.

"He realizes the law of averages has to catch up. In a way, it's good that the slump has happened now and there is always scope for improvement. We have planned his preparations leading up to the World Cup. At the moment, it is necessary for him to get the runs against West Indies. All this is a learning curve. He is just 25," Sharma said, adding: "He is keen to put the England tour behind him."

CLT20: Williamson canes Cape Cobras

RAIPUR: Kane Williamson set the Naya Raipur stadium alight with a blistering century on Friday night. His unbeaten 101 off just 49 deliveries was the first century in this year's CLT20.

Williamson severely caned the Cape Cobras attack to help Northern Knights post a formidable 205 for five, the first time the 200-mark was breached at the venue.

Northern Knights then had the Cobras struggling at 44 for two in 7.2 overs when rain stopped the match. With the par score being 77 at that stage, Knights emerged the winners by 33 runs by DL Method.

Knights had dominated their rivals in three matches in the Qualifiers and Friday was no different, winning their Group B game with a comprehensive victory.

With Hashim Amla already in the pavilion just before the play was halted by rain, was a big blow for the listless Cobras' hopes and even if the play had resumed they looked incapable of a fightback.

After being put in, Knights were given a rollicking start by Williamson and Anton Devcich as the depleted outfit from South Africa looked pretty rusty.

Their pace attack without Dale Steyn just lacked the sting, especially as Vernon Philander and Rory Kleinveldt have just recovered from injuries. With the inform Knights openers having played a big part in their team's entry into main round, were at their attacking best.

The two put on 140 in just 13.4 overs (82 balls) to lay the foundation of the big total. The two could have gone on and on, but unfortunately Devcich (67, 46b, 8x4, 1x6) was run out to a fine direct hit.

Williamson was far from affected by the departure of his partner and went on to complete his century in the final over, when he hammered Philander over the covers for his fifth six off a free hit. He also struck 8 boundaries during his 49-ball knock which virtually took the game away from the Cobras.

Thanks to Williamson's effort, there were many firsts during the innings. It was the first time 200 runs were posted by a team at the venue which had hosted two Delhi Daredevils IPL matches last year and six CLT20 Qualifiers last week.

'If Ajmal is strong, he will overcome this'

Written By Unknown on Jumat, 19 September 2014 | 21.24

MUMBAI: There is one man who would exactly know how Saeed Ajmal would be feeling right now. It is unlikely that the Pakistan off-spinner would have had a single night of decent sleep ever since he was banned from international cricket for an alleged 'illegal' action.

Almost 20 years ago, Test cricket's top wicket-taker Muttiah Muralitharan, then a young offie who had just begun to gain strides in top-level cricket, experienced something similar.

Much to his entire country's consternation, the Sri Lankan spinner was 'called' for chucking multiple times during his team's tour to Australia.

Murali's public humiliation marred the series, and served as a catalyst for Sri Lanka's triumph in the 1996 World Cup, as the whole team rallied around him.

As Pakistan great Javed Miandad pointed out, Ajmal can certainly take inspiration from Murali, who bounced back each time his action was questioned - he was banned from bowling the 'doosra' in 2004.

Murali himself, though, feels that it would largely depend on Ajmal himself on how he comes out triumphant in his hour of crisis.

"It is difficult to say how he would or should cope with it, because it depends on your personality, how strong you are in tacking obstacles that may appear along the way. If you are mentally strong, you will bounce back, if you're weak, you'll be finished," Muralitharan told TOI on Thursday.

The Lankan great, who finished his career with 800 Test wickets, felt that the best way to overcome this phase for Ajmal would be to 'prove it to people that he isn't doing anything wrong.'

"In my case, I was naturally upset when the allegations (of chucking the ball) were first made against me. After all, you're only a human! However, I believed in myself. I wanted to prove it that I wasn't doing anything wrong. I cleared around six-seven Tests during my almost two-decade old career. Once he proves it that his action is legal, and the 'bend' in his arm while delivering the ball is below 15 degrees, he can bowl again," said Murali, who is ironically now a spin bowling coach with the Australian team for their series against Pakistan in UAE.

Kings XI Punjab off to a winning start

MOHALI: Kings XI Punjab registered a comprehensive five-wicket win against the Hobart Hurricanes in their first CLT20 encounter at the PCA stadium on Thursday.

KXIP's Lankan recruit Thisara Perera gave an all-round performance, first picking up two wickets in a miserly bowling spell and then hit a quick 35 (20b; 4x4, 1x6) as Punjab romped home with 14 balls to spare.

Coming in at 775 to join his captain George Bailey at the crease, Perera instantly took the pressure off by smashing a boundary, a six, and then again another four off leggie Cameron Boyce.

The Lankan set the tone and added an unbroken 69-run partnership with Bailey (34 not out off 27b; 5x4), who finished the match with a flurry of boundaries.

It wasn't all that easy for the Kings as Hurricanes' new ball bowlers -Doug Bollinger and Ben Hilfenhaus - had them tottering at 233 after their opening burst, but Glenn Maxwell (43 off 25b; 4x4, 2x6) produced a characteristic high-octane innings to make sure that Punjab never felt the pressure of the asking run-rate.

Earlier, it was a slow start for the Hurricanes after being put in to bat. Openers Tim Paine and Ben Dunk were tied down by the new-ball bowlers and when Paine tried to break free, left-arm spinner Akshar Patel castled him with an arm ball.

Perera was the best bowler on show and he picked up his first wicket, having Dunk (26 off 25b, 4x4) caught at deep cover in the Australian's pursuit to clear the cover boundary.

Aiden Blizzard (27 off 18b, 2x4, 1x6) hit some lusty blows to give much-needed momentum to the Hurricanes' innings, but Perera cut his stay short.

After Shoaib Malik gifted his wicket to leg-spinner Karanveer Singh, Kings XI slumped to 784 in the 13th over.

'If Ajmal is strong, he will overcome this'

CSK vs KKR in a clash of heavyweights

Written By Unknown on Kamis, 18 September 2014 | 21.24

HYDERABAD: A clash between the two most successful Indian Premier League (IPL) teams - Kolkata Knight Riders and Chennai Super Kings - in the opener of the Champions League T20 at the RGIC Stadium on Wednesday night is the best advertisement organizers could have hoped for.

With the CLT20 lagging far behind the home-bred IPL in the popularity stakes, a clash between these heavyweights could not only perk up spectator interest but also set the tone for the event.

By winning the IPL twice in the last three years, Kolkata Knight Riders have silenced many detractors. Known to be slow starters, the Knight Riders can ill afford to do that in this continental tournament.

"We have to be off the blocks from the start. We cannot afford to wait. It's important that we are on top of our game from the opening match itself," skipper Gambhir said.

The Knight Riders begin with a handicap. The absence of South African Morne Morkel and Bangladesh's Shakib Al Hasan is a big blow. KKR have featured in the CLT20 twice, but without much success. Gambhir feels the side is motivated enough to set the record straight.

"We will miss them as they are quality players. But we have the team to win and hence we are motivated enough."

It won't be that easy for the champions as they are up against a side which is eager to get back to winning ways. The Super Kings have an unenviable record in the IPL, having made it to the last four in all the seven editions of the tournament. The two-time champions have also played in the CLT20 every season expect the inaugural one.

The availability of West Indies all-rounder Dwayne Bravo tilts the scales in their favour. Skipper Dhoni had admitted that the Super Kings had sorely missed the services of Bravo in the IPL.

"It's good Bravo is back in the side. His presence gives us stability and balance," Dhoni had said earlier.
