Warne helps Tahir before India game

Written By Unknown on Rabu, 02 April 2014 | 21.24

MIRPUR: As the South African spinners geared up to counter a formidable Indian line-up, they had a pleasant surprise awaiting them at the net session when legendary leg-spinner Shane Warne came over to hand them tips ahead of the second semifinal of the ICC World T20 on Friday.

"We were all surprised to find him at the nets. May be he was getting bored at the hotel and came over to have a bowl," team's senior batsman Hashim Amla would give nothing away.

Warne spent more than an hour at the Proteas nets offering his expertise to help the likes of Imran Tahir get their act right against the in-form Indian top-order comprising Virat Kohli and Yuvraj Singh.

The team's media manager Lerato Malekutu said Warne's visit was a surprise for the team.

"We were all surprised to see him out here. He bowled six, seven balls. May be he was getting bored in his hotel room," she said.

It was around quarter to 11 in the morning when Warne dropped in at the Sher-e-Bangla Stadium and his first question was, "Mate, are the South Africans done with their batting and bowling?"

After being told that they were still doing their fielding drills, Warne retired to the VIP lounge of the stadium.

Once the net started, he stood behind the stumps watching the spinners with minute attention. He was seen speaking to Tahir especially but he also watched JP Duminy bowl his off-breaks and left-arm slow bowler Aaron Phangiso roll his arm over.

He had a long chat with his old mate and rival Allan Donald, who is the South African bowling coach.

There are rumours that Warne might have dropped in to guide Tahir on Donald's insistence.

Later, Warne bowled a few deliveries to Quinton de Kock at the far nets. He flighted them and although De Kock was not troubled, he could not also get them away for big hits.

Twice he gave Warne the charge but checked his shot at the last moment to play copybook forward defensive strokes.

By the time, he finished, the local media had arrived and Warne evaded any queries as to what he was doing and had to use his body feint to dodge one of the cameraman, who was taking his shots from the front.

"Hello", Warne said and made sure that the cameraman knew that he was not amused.

Suddenly, the South African practice had become incidental. Amla did answer a few queries from a handful of scribes who were present.

"The preparation has been good. Obviously, we had some time before the semifinals and got some time to rest after back to back games. It's a good opportunity for us. We have played some good cricket, won some close games and that is as hard as our team has ever been," Amla said of their performance so far.

He said the South African team is not worried about facing an in-form Team India in the semifinal.

"No, I think whatever you get drawn in, it's out of your hand."

"My game depends on what team needs at a particular time. The game has to be set up. Our job (partner Quinton de Kock) is to play positively upfront and give the team a good start. Some days it works, some days, it does not. But I am enjoying my role in T20's. I am enjoying this period and the experience.

"I think it's all about assessing situations of the game and playing according to it. It's not only about scoring quicker upfront but you have to see what your partner is doing," said South Africa's most prolific batsman in longer version.

Amla was all praise for his opening partner De Kock, who he hoped would go big against the Indian team in the semifinal.

"Quiney (nickname) is a fearless cricketer and is working very hard to put in a big performance," Amla said.

But by the end of the training session, the limelight was stolen by someone who had taken 1001 international wickets in his 15-year career!

Injured Yuvraj skips practice session

MIRPUR: The left ankle injury during yesterday's barefoot football match today forced senior India batsman Yuvraj Singh to opt out of the team training session.

Yuvraj sustained the injury during the team's customary football session at the BCB Academy in Mirpur yesterday. Later, he was seen limping with his left ankle being protected by a crepe bandage.

Yuvraj did not accompany the team for the training session at the Khan Saheb Osman Ali Stadium in Fatullah today. He was advised to stay back in the team hotel and take rest.

"Yuvraj singh had a blow on his left ankle. For precautionary reasons, he is taking rest today," team's media manager Dr R N Baba said in a media release.

It is not known whether he will train tomorrow or not. While the extent of the injury is not known, the idea of trainer Sudarshan to do something different could well cost the team dearly if Yuvraj does not get fit for Friday's semifinal match against the South Africans.

Interestingly, Yuvraj had sustained a serious knee injury in 2006 before a Champions Trophy semifinal against Australia at Mohali.

Back then, the Indian team, coached by Greg Chappell, played a game of 'kho-kho' for entertainment and Yuvraj twisted his knee while turning.

But today, the team did not play football to start off training and straightaway started with their serious net session.

West Indies can make history: Sammy

DHAKA: West Indian captain Darren Sammy was confident Wednesday that his side can achieve what no other team has done in the history of the World Twenty20 -- defend the title.

Famous for playing a cavalier brand of cricket, the West Indies won the fourth edition of the World Twenty20 in Sri Lanka two years ago, and are now just two matches away from defending it.

They meet Sri Lanka in the first of two semifinals in Dhaka on Thursday.

Sammy said his side was ready to make history. "We left the Caribbean with that motivating factor for us," he said.

"It's something which no team has done before and we are confident that we can do that if we play the brand of cricket we played in the last three games."

India won the inaugural World Twenty20 title held in South Africa in 2007, before Pakistan clinched the second tournament in England two years later.

England won the third tournament, held in the Caribbean in 2010. This year, the West Indies lost their opening match to India before beating Bangladesh, Australia and Pakistan in group two at the Super-10 stage.

Sammy said facing Sri Lankan spinner Rangan Herath, who took an astonishing 3-5 against New Zealand in Chittagong to guide his side into the semis, would not be a problem.

"The make-up of our side allows the guys like (Dwayne) Smith and (Chris) Gayle to go hard at the top, so we don't mind the left-arm spinner and hopefully we don't play him (Herath) like New Zealand did."

Sammy said his spinners would also pose a challenge for the rival team. "Just as it (spin) will be a challenge for us, it will be a challenge for them as well. You are looking at the number one and two in West Indies' bowling line up," said Sammy of his spinners Samuel Badree and Sunil Narine -- ranked one and two in international Twenty20 rankings.

Badree took three wickets for 10 runs and Narine grabbed three for 16 as the West Indies thumped Pakistan by 84 runs in Dhaka on Tuesday to reach the last four.

The second semi-final will be between India and South Africa in Dhaka on Friday.

The final is in Dhaka on April 6.

Dhoni trying to gag media, Zee tells HC

CHENNAI: Dhoni is attempting to gag the media from reporting the IPL betting and match fixing scam, Zee television network alleged, adding that the cricket India captain had not yet been given clean chit by the Mudgal committee, which has recommended an independent and full-fledged probe into the issue.

Responding to Dhoni's Rs 100-crore defamation suit in the Madras high court on Wednesday, the channel said it merely reported suspended IPS officer G Sampath Kumar's deposition to the committee.

"Contents of deposition of G Sampath Kumar came into public domain on February 11 when India Today published the extracts of Sampath Kumar on its website. The name of Dhoni prominently appears in the extract. In his deposition before the committee, Sampath Kumar, IPS, SP, Railways, Tiruchi, categorically deposed that one Uttam Jain @ Kitty spoke about the involvement of Dhoni. The fact that Sampath Kumar had stated the name of Dhoni before the Mudgal committee is not under challenge. On the contrary, Sampath Kumar himself corroborated the fact of his deposition and naming Dhoni before Mudgal committee in a sting operation carried out by Zee television," said the counter, filed in the high court on Wednesday.

Denying that it deliberately attempted to malign Dhoni, Zee said the cricket captain was attempting to gag media from discussing an issue of national and public importance.

It, however, said Zee never said Dhoni was aware of fixing matches, that he was a participant in fixing matches, that he was shielding persons linked to such activities and that his wife was involved in murky dealings with Vindoo Dara Singh.
Despite several bids, there was no response from both Dhoni and the Chennai police, zee said.

Zee's counter also said that Mudgal committee raised serious questions on the investigation conducted by the crime branch CID of Chennai police. "It observed that the issue had not been investigated by Chennai police despite availability of such information and called the conduct of the Chennai police curious," the counter said.
The matter is expected to be taken up for further hearing next week.

Cook still unable to lift lid on Kevin axe

LONDON: England captain Alastair Cook said Tuesday he was "frustrated" at his inability to reveal the reasons behind Kevin Pietersen's international exile, although he promised all would become clear "soon".

Despite being England's all-time leading run scorer across all formats, South Africa-born Pietersen was axed by the England and Wales Cricket Board in February following the team's 5-0 Ashes thrashing in Australia.

But precisely why he was sent into international exile, with seemingly no hope of return, remains a mystery and Cook was unable to shed any fresh light on Tuesday.

"I can't actually answer that question, totally, at this precise moment in time which is incredibly frustrating for me," Cook told Sky Sports News at county side Essex's media day.

"Everyone will say I'm sitting on the fence, but there are a number of reasons which will become clearer soon.

"You have to respect the decision and the position I am in at this precise moment in time," the left-handed opening batsman added.

Initially the ECB would only cite the need for a new "team ethic and philosophy" as the reason behind the axing of the 33-year-old Pietersen, England's leading run-scorer in the Ashes.

But, following fierce criticism from the likes of former captain Michael Vaughan regarding such wording and that management ought to be able to handle 'maverick' players, the board clarified its position with another February statement saying the team had to be rebuilt and that to do that "we must invest in our captain Alastair Cook...with everyone pulling in the same direction and able to trust each other".

The ECB added: "It is for those reasons that we have decided to move on without Kevin Pietersen."

But that statement still left unanswered the question of what precisely Pietersen had done in Australia to deserve such drastic treatment, with some in the England hierarchy saying confidentiality reasons prevented them from revealing precise details.

That simply led to more fresh criticism of the ECB amid suggestions they'd rather having malleable 'nice chaps' on board rather than different types of possibly more awkward characters who were nevertheless match-winners.

England's recent struggles, culminating with the humiliation of Monday's 45-run defeat by minnows the Netherlands in the World Twenty20 in Bangladesh, where a team without Pietersen and Cook, who does not play in T20 internationals, were dismissed for just 88, have only led to fresh questions.

Cook accepted the 'Pietersen issue' would not go away until England addressed it full on, but insisted he couldn't do so at this moment in time.

"Everyone is going to keep asking that question until we give the answers, but at the moment we just can't so I'd love to talk about something slightly different," said the 29-year-old.

Some of Pietersen's celebrity friends, such as television personality Piers Morgan, have subjected the ECB to a constant barrage of social media criticism since England decided they could do without him.

If it's arguable how much good Morgan's support has done Pietersen, it's certainly irked the England hierarchy, including Cook, who were all party to the controversial decision.

"If anyone thinks the decision was taken lightly and without a lot of consideration and a lot of thought -- a lot of things went into the decision," Cook said.

"It was a tough decision. The decisions will be made clearer in due course. You just have to respect that at the moment. It is frustrating. That is the position I'm in," he added.

Shehzad ton powers Pakistan to win

Written By Unknown on Minggu, 30 Maret 2014 | 21.25

DHAKA: Opener Ahmed Shehzad smashed an unbeaten 111 off 62 balls as Pakistan thrashed hosts Bangladesh by 50 runs to stay on course for the semifinals of the World Twenty20 in Dhaka on Sunday.

Scorecard | Super 10 Standings | Match in Pics

The 22-year-old from Lahore hit 10 boundaries and five sixes in his first T20 international century to lift Pakistan to a commanding 190-5 after they elected to bat.

Bangladesh managed only 140-7 in reply in front of a sell-out home crowd of 25,000 at the Sher-e-Bangla stadium to suffer their third successive defeat in group two of the Super-10s.

With both Bangladesh and Australia out of the race, the winner of Tuesday's last league match between Pakistan and the West Indies will join India in the semifinals from the group.

Shehzad, who reached his century off 58 balls in the 18th over, was caught off a Mashrafe Mortaza no-ball in the 19th after hitting the previous ball for a six.

The error proved expensive as Pakistan scored 44 runs in the last two overs, with Mortaza conceding 24 in the penultimate over.

Shehzad hammered 31 in an opening stand of 43 with Kamran Akmal (nine) that came off just 27 deliveries.

Bangladesh fought back by taking three quick wickets, two of them by left-arm spinner Abdur Razzak, as Pakistan slipped to 71-3 by the 10th over.

Umar Akmal, Pakistan's hero against Australia when he made 94 off 54 balls, was dismissed by Mohammad Mahmudullah for no score.

Shehzad gave the innings a boost by smashing two sixes and as many boundaries in the 13th over bowled by seamer Ziaur Rahman, which cost 22 runs.

Shehzad put on 83 for the fourth wicket with Shoaib Malik (26) in the only substantial partnership of the innings, a lesson that escaped the Bangladesh batsmen.

The hosts, looking for a bright start, lost four top-order wickets in 9.1 overs with just 47 runs on the board.

Shakib Al Hasan delighted the crowd with a 32-ball 38 that included two sixes and two fours, before he top-edged a catch off seamer Umar Gul in the 15th over to effectively end Bangladesh's challenge.

Gul finished with three for 30 in four overs, while off-spinner Saeed Ajmal took two for 20.

India play Australia in the second match of the double-header later on Sunday.

Shehzad ton powers Pakistan to win

NEW DELHI: Chasing a massive 191-run target, Bangladesh lost wickets at regular intervals against Pakistan in a crucial Group 2 league match of the ICC World Twenty20 at Shere Bangla National Stadium in Mirpur on Sunday.

Scorecard | Super 10 Standings

The hosts lost four wickets inside 10 overs to be reduced to 47/4 in 9.1 overs.

Bangladesh started their chase positively as they added 30 runs quickly but the script changed dramatically when Umar Gul dismissed Tamim Iqbal (16) in the fifth over.

Earlier, opener Ahmed Shehzad slammed unbeaten 62-ball 111 to boost Pakistan to 190/5.

Unconquered Shehzad smacked five huge sixes and ten boundaries in his magical knock as he became the first Pakistani batsman to score a century in Twenty20 Internationals.

Shahid Afridi also played a blinder in the end as the all-rounder smashed two sixes and a four in his quick-fire 9-ball 22.

Shehzad added 83 runs with Shoaib Malik (26) for the fourth wicket to lead the resurgent of the Pakistan innings after they lost Umar Akmal (0) and skipper Mohammad Hafeez (8) in three balls to be reduced to 71/3 in 9.2 overs.

Shehzad was the chief aggressor as he raced to his fifty in just 30 balls, which included two sixes and five fours, and continued his momentum till the end.

Spinner Abdur Razzak struck in the fifth over to give Bangladesh big breakthrough as he removed Pakistan opener Kamran Akmal (9).

Shehzad made the maximum use of the mandatory powerplay as he smashed five fours and a six to help Pakistan get past 50 in overs.

Pakistan got off to blistering start after skipper Hafeez won the toss and decided to bat.

Pakistan have made one change, bringing in Sohail Tanvir in place of Bilawal Bhatti. Bangladesh brought back Abdur Razzak and left out Sohag Gazi.

Pakistan are gearing up to take a step forward towards semifinal qualification as they aim to get past an out-of-sync Bangladesh.

A victory against Bangladesh will officially end Australia's theoretical chance of qualifying for the last four as George Bailey's men can win only two matches from here on.

The victory will also make the West Indies versus Pakistan clash on April 1 a virtual quarterfinal, which will decide the second team from the group after India.

For Bangladesh, they are hoping against hope that they are able to pull a coup of sorts by upsetting the Pakistan applecart.

Teams:

Pakistan: Ahmed Shehzad, Kamran Akmal, Mohammad Hafeez, Umar Akmal, Sohaib Maqsood, Shoaib Malik, Shahid Afridi, Sohail Tanvir, Umar Gul, Zulfiqar Babar, Saeed Ajmal

Bangladesh: Tamim Iqbal, Anamul Haque, Shamsur Rahman, Shakib Al Hasan, Mushfiqur Rahim, Nasir Hossain, Mahmudullah, Ziaur Rahman, Abdur Razzak, Mashrafe Mortaza, Al-Amin Hossain
