CHENNAI: Comeback batsman Yuvraj Singh was on Wednesday picked in the India A squad which will play England XI in their opening three-day practice game scheduled from October 30 in Mumbai.

Yuvraj, who has returned to cricket after recovering from a rare germ cell cancer, showed fine form in North Zone's Duleep Trophy match against Central Zone by getting a double hundred.

The 30-year-old left-hander will be the batting backbone of the 14-member India 'A' line-up, to be led by Suresh Raina.

Post-recovery from cancer, Yuvraj had returned to competitive cricket in the World Twenty20 and a good performance in the warm-up game would go a long way in getting him the selectors' nod for the four-match Test series against England starting November 15.

The squad, announced by the new selection panel headed by Sandeep Patil, features six batsmen in all, including upcoming names such as Shikhar Dhawan Ajinkya Rahane and Manoj Tiwary.

Wriddhimaan Saha is the lone wicketkeeper in the squad. The bowling attack of the side would be spearheaded by Irfan Pathan and he will have Ashok Dinda and Vinay Kumar to assist him.

The Squad: Suresh Raina (Capt.), Murali Vijay, Shikhar Dhawan, Ajinkya Rahane, Yuvraj Singh, Manoj Tiwary, Wriddhimaan Saha, Irfan Pathan, Vinay Kumar, Parwinder Awana, Ashok Dinda, Robin Bisht, Ashok Menaria, Abhinav Mukund.

Coach: Lalchand Rajput.

'Doubt that India can replace Gauti, Viru'

The former pace legend laid his faith on Gambhir and Sehwag and said home conditions will help the Delhi duo to find its lost touch. (TOI Photo)

NEW DELHI: Former Pakistan captain Wasim Akram on Wednesday questioned if the Indian team has the bench strength to replace opening duo of Gautam Gambhir and Virender Sehwag ahead of the England series at home.

"I doubt India have a Plan B to replace them. With Rahul Dravid and VVS Laxman retiring, the middle order will be bereft of experience and under the circumstances, dislodging a time-tested combination at the top may not be very prudent," Akram said.

The former pace legend laid his faith on Gambhir and Sehwag and said home conditions will help the Delhi duo to find its lost touch.

"Starting mid-November, India will have a long international calendar at home. They will play quality teams like England and Australia and hopefully, Pakistan will tour in the winter.

I think this will give ample opportunity for men like Virender Sehwag and Gautam Gambhir to regain their form," Akram said.

"Both showed glimpses of their touch in their last Champions League games and it's senseless to question their ability as international batsmen.

"I don't think India will experiment much with their opening pair of Gambhir and Sehwag. On Indian wickets, they will exploit the home conditions well," he added.

The 46-year-old former Pakistani cricketer also feels Delhi Daredevils have a good chance of claiming the Champions League Twenty20 trophy in South Africa and it would also be a big opportunity for Sehwag to redeem himself.

"While the South Africans, with plenty of home-bred talents, will fancy their chance to win the tournament this time, Delhi will be a strong contender.

Delhi have improved with every game and the fact that their top six batsmen are technically accomplished and truly international class will give them a lot of confidence," he said.

"Although this is T20 cricket, I still believe a batsman must be equipped to play on all conditions to excel. On this front, Delhi are blessed with men like David Warner, Kevin Pietersen, Mahela Jayawardene and Ross Taylor.

"Plus, Sehwag looked good against Perth Scorchers. His 44-ball 52 will give him a lot of self-reliance. And, this is time for Sehwag to prove his critics wrong," Akram added.

'Sehwag, me still the best opening pair'

NEW DELHI: Gautam Gambhir today hit back at critics who have raised doubts on the future of his opening combination with Virender Sehwag following their recent form slump, saying with an average of 53 they are still the best in the country.

"We still average 53 as an opening pair, which I think is one of the best when it comes to opening the batting in world cricket. There are not many opening pairs who have played for such a long time and have an average of 53 per innings. And if 53 is not good enough, I don't know what is good enough," said Gambhir.

"As an opening pair, you average 50 per inning and if you are giving 50 runs start in every innings, you can't do more and if people talk about not contributing, I will suggest them to look at the stats. Average of 53 is tremendous, its something a lot of opening pairs have not done in the past and are not doing today," he added.

Sehwag, in the last two years, has scored only one century and has averaged 37.26, which is way below his career average of 50.64 in Tests.

Gambhir, in the same period, has not scored any century and averaged just 30.31 as compared to his career average of 44.35 in the longest version of the game.

When asked if he is under pressure not having scored a Test ton in last two years, Gambhir replied in his trademark aggressive style, "It's not about scoring a hundred everytime, it's about contributing when you are opening the batting. It's not only me, a lot of other people have also not scored tons.

"People only discuss about scoring a hundred, I don't know why. I got 93 in South Africa, 85-odd in Australia...15 or seven more and people would not be discussing my hundred.

"It's about how much you can contribute when you open the batting. For me, it is all about contributing to the cause of the team," said Gambhir, whose last hundred came against Bangladesh in January, 2010.

With the Test series against England just round the corner, Gambhir is looking to get back to the basics and work on his game with childhood coach Sanjay Bhardwaj.

He, however, replied in negative when asked if he was seeking his coach's help to iron out any technical flaws ahead of the two tough series against England and Australia at home.

"Had it been a technical error, I would have not scored runs in one-day cricket. I think it is good 1100 runs in last 24 innings in one-day cricket. I was in the ICC ODI team. I know how people start relating your Test form to one-day form and T20 form. Three formats are completely different and ultimately when you are playing the three formats, it's very difficult to have the same consistency.

"Had it been a technical error, I would not have scored runs in both ODI and Test cricket. I would have not got the starts in Test cricket as well."

Gambhir insisted that he is not at all "insecure" about his place in the Test side with the likes of Shikhar Dhawan and Murali Vijay performing consistently in the domestic circuit.

"Never, I am not at all insecure about my place in the side. I don't know where all these things are coming from. Ultimately, when you open the batting, you want to contribute and you want to give a good start to the team. Giving a good start is your first job."

Talking about IPL champions, Kolkata Knight Riders' disappointing show in the ongoing Champions League Twenty20, the KKR skipper said, "These things happen. We are the IPL champions. You go into the tournament thinking that you have to win but sometimes you don't end up winning all the tournaments. Sometimes you do well, sometimes you don't but we are a quality side."

Gambhir did not agree with suggestions that the upcoming series against England is a "revenge" series for India.

"I don't believe in a word revenge because there is no such word in cricket or any other sport. It's all about doing well and that is more important. Revenge is for media not for a professional cricketer," he said.

Gambhir, who played cricket with Red Bull driver Mark Webber at Noida International University this afternoon, said he won't be attending the second edition of the Indian Grand Prix as it was his first marriage anniversary.

"It's my first marriage anniversary on October 28 and I don't want to make my wife angry," he laughed.

On F1's future in India, Gambhir said, "F1 has a great future in India. There's a lot of excitement and enthusiasm around the race. I don't know whether it would be able to beat the popularity of cricket in India, but it has a future."

Aussies respect Tendulkar, says Webber

Australia PM Julia Gilliard recently conferred Tendulkar with the Membership of the Order of Australia, an honour rarely bestowed on non-Australians. (AFP Photo)

GREATER NOIDA: Australian Formula 1 driver Mark Webber said here Wednesday that his country has utmost respect for Indian cricketing maestro Sachin Tendulkar.

"Sachin Tendulkar has just been an incredible cricketer and one of the most amazing sportspersons the world has seen. Australians have utmost respect for Tendulkar.

The government, the people, everyone respects him," said Webber, who drives for current constructors' World Champions Red Bull.

Australia Prime Minister Julia Gilliard recently conferred Tendulkar with the Membership of the Order of Australia, an honour rarely bestowed on non-Australians.

This did not go well with many Australians, who questioned whether the Indian batting legend should receive this honour.

However, Webber had a different take on it.

"We have given the Order of Australia to cricketers from other nations too. They have been doing it for a while now. We gave it to Garfield Sobers and Brian Lara.

If we can give it to Lara then Tendulkar certainly deserves it," said the 36-year-old.

Dhoni plays under Raina, bowls 2 overs

DURBAN: His side already out of the reckoning, Chennai Super Kings skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni on Monday played under Suresh Raina's captaincy and bowled two expensive overs in their inconsequential Champions League Twenty20 match against Yorkshire.

Dhoni also chose not to keep the wickets and Wriddhiman Saha wore the gloves in the Group B match at the Kingsmead.

Dhoni made a fine fielding effort in the third over of the Yorkshire innings, a last-minute dive near the boundary after a long chase but could not stop the ball from touching the ropes.

The crowd anticipated Dhoni to roll his arms as he had bowling practice before the start of the match. That moment arrived in the 15th over when Yorkshire were struggling at 88 for three. His expensive two overs, however, yielded 25 runs.

Bowling around the stumps, Dhoni conceded seven runs in his first over with two wides though he did not concede a boundary.

He continued for another over -- 17th -- but was clobbered for two consecutive sixes to concede 18 from that over.

Gary Ballance guides Yorkshire to 140/6

NEW DELHI: Chennai Super Kings suffered early blows as they lost Faf du Plessis and Murali Vijay in quick succession against Yorkshire in their final Group B match of the Champions League Twenty20 at Kingsmead in Durban on Monday.

Scorecard

Yorkshire pacer Steven Patterson struck to give Chennai Super Kings early jolt as he dismissed du Plessis.

Earlier, Gary Ballance smashed five sixes in his 58 runs knock to steer Yorkshire to a challenging 140/6 against Chennai Super Kings.

Gary Ballance and David Miller shared 78-run stand to resurrect Yorkshire after losing quick wickets against CSK.

Yorkshire got off to a bad start as they suffered early blows, losing Andrew Gale, Adam Lyth and Joe Root in quick succession.

Albie Morkel struck to give Chennai first breakthrough as he dismissed Gale. Ben Hilfenhaus joined Morkel in the next over to give Yorkshire another jolt by removing Lyth.

Morkel notched up another wicket in his next over to leave Yorkshire tottering at 43/3 in 8 overs.

Gale and Lyth gave Yorkshire steady start after Chennai Super Kings stand-in skipper Suresh Raina won the toss and decided to field.

Already out of the semifinal race, IPL heavyweights Chennai Super Kings would look to redeem some pride and end their campaign on a high when they take on a less-formidable Yorkshire.

Both Chennai and fellow IPL side Mumbai Indians have crashed out of the tournament after Sydney Sixers and Highveld Lions qualified for the semifinals from Group B.

Even before the first ball was bowled in Saturday's IPL derby between Chennai and Mumbai, the match was rendered a dead-rubber after Lions notched up a five-wicket victory over Yorkshire earlier in the day to become the second team from Group B to reach the semifinals.

Teams:

Chennai Super Kings: Murali Vijay, Faf du Plessis, Suresh Raina (Capt), MS Dhoni (wk), S Badrinath, Albie Morkel, Ravindra Jadeja, Wriddhiman Saha, Ravichandran Ashwin, Ben Hilfenhaus, Doug Bollinger

Yorkshire: Andrew Gale (Capt), Adam Lyth, Joe Root, Phil Jaques, Gary Ballance, Adil Rashid, Dan Hodgson (wk), Azeem Rafiq, Iain Wardlaw, Steven Patterson, Oliver Hannon-Dalby
