NEW DELHI: Sri Lankan Spinner Ajantha Mendis struck in the sixth over to dismiss Chris Gayle, giving West Indies second blow at the score of 14 in the final of the World Twenty20 in Colombo on Sunday.

Scorecard

Gayle was trapped leg before wickets after his struggling knock of 3 that came off 16 balls.

Earlier, Sri Lankan pacer Angelo Mathews got Johnson Charles caught by Nuwan Kulasekara in the first over without a run on board after West Indies elected to bat.

Charles lobbed up Mathews towards mid-off and got caught by Kulasekara.

"When we put a total on the board, we do well," said West Indies skipper Darren Sammy after winning the toss.

Sri Lanka made one change from the side that beat Pakistan in the semi-final, bringing in 20-year-old spinner Akila Dananjaya in place of Rangana Herath.

The West Indies retained the same team that defeated Australia in the second semi-final.

Sri Lanka are aiming to win their second world title after a gap of 16 years as their first and only World trophy came in 1996 while the Caribbean side are playing a World event final after nearly 30 years, having last played against India at the Lord's in 1983.

Sri Lanka should be favourites not only because of home conditions but also due to the variety of players from Mahela Jayawardene, Kumar Sangakkara to Thisara Perera who can change their game according to the needs.

The West Indies on the other hand have some very competent T20 players in Marlon Samuels, Dwayne Bravo and Kieron Pollard but all of them love to rally around Gayle who is the pivotal force in this Caribbean set-up.

Sri Lanka: Mahela Jayawardene (capt), Angelo Mathews, Kumar Sangakkara, Tillakaratne Dilshan, Lahiru Thirimanne, Jeevan Mendis, Thisara Perera, Lasith Malinga, Nuwan Kulasekara, Ajantha Mendis, Akila Dananjaya.

West Indies: Darren Sammy (capt), Dwayne Bravo, Samuel Badree, Johnson Charles, Chris Gayle, Kieron Pollard, Sunil Narine, Denesh Ramdin, Ravi Rampaul, Andre Russell, Marlon Samuels .
