NEW DELHI: Chasing a target of 164 runs, Perth Scorchers struggled as they lost early wickets in the opening match of the Champions League T20 at the SuperSport Park in Centurion.

Scorecard

Alfonso Thomas gave the Titans an important breakthrough when he scalped Herschelle Gibbs (19), who failed to read the short pitched ball that was top-edged and could only find the gloves of keeper Heino Kuhn.

Right before that, Cornelius de Villiers struck twice in his first over to dismiss Shaun Marsh and Marcus North to give the Titans the best possible start.

While Marsh (7) edged a slightly wide delivery to the slips, Scorchers skipper North (0) was left completely bemused when a short of length ball toothed its way on to the stumps.

Earlier, after being spearheaded by a striking innings by Jacques Rudolph, Titans set a massive 164-run target for Perth Scorchers.

Rudolph who remained unbeaten on 83 with 9 boundaries and 3 sixes blasted his way to dominate the Scorchers bowling attack as the Titans cruised at ease

The Scorchers got their first breakthrough when after a quick fire 50, Henry Davids became the first victim of Michael Beer.

Nathan Rimmington got two more wickets for the Scorchers in quick succession when he scalped Farhaan Behardien and David Wiese in successive deliveries.

Davids (54) scored an impressive 36-ball half-century with 3 fours and 4 sixes to spearhead the Titans along with fellow opener Rudolph.

Rudolph reached his half-century in quick time as well right after he and Davids got the Titans off to a flying start when they put up a quick fire 50-run partnership off just 33 balls for the first wicket in under six overs.

Earlier, Perth Scorchers skipper Marcus North won the toss and elected to bowl against Titans.

Heading into the opening match of the 2012 Champions League Twenty20, both the Titans from South Africa and Perth Scorchers from Australia will look to ensure glory for themselves after having regularly topped the respective T20 leagues in their country's domestic circuit.

It will only be apt if the money-spinning Champions League, the last of the short-format extravaganzas this season - matches the quality of the above tournaments and makes it a riveting affair.

The Champions League is T20's proverbial 800-pound gorilla, a very costly affair, which pays the participating teams handsomely.

Teams:

Titans: Martin van Jaarsveld (Capt.), Farhaan Behardien, Henry Davids, Cornelius de Villiers, Heino Kuhn (wk), Eden Links, Ethy Mbhalati, Jacques Rudolph, Alfonso Thomas, Roelof van der Merwe, David Wiese.

Perth Scorchers: Marcus North (Capt.), Michael Beer, Ben Edmondson, Herschelle Gibbs, Brad Hogg, Simon Katich, Mitchell Marsh, Shaun Marsh, Joe Mennie, Nathan Rimmington, Luke Ronchi (wk).
