MOHALI: Bengal wicket keeper Wriddhiman Saha and all-rounder Laxmi Ratan Shukla stitched together a partnership of 124 runs for the 6th wicket to help Bengal reach 280/7 on Day 1 of their Ranji Trophy match against Punjab at the PCA stadium, Mohali.

Earlier, luck favoured Punjab captain Mandeep Singh as he won the toss and elected to field first on a green top wicket. Faced with some hostile bowling from Manpreet Gony and Sandeep Sharma, Bengal openers started on a sedate note.

However, opener Jayojit Basu couldn't last long as Gony had him caught behind for 7. Writam Porel then joined Shubhomoy Das at the crease and the two took the score beyond fifty. Amitoze Singh then struck for Punjab as he castled Shubhomoy for 28.

Skipper Manoj Tiwary and Porel tried to resurrect the Bengal inning, however, Gony got into the act once again removing skipper Manoj Tiwary (20), who looked in fine touch but edged one to Mandeep Singh in the slip cordon.
Bengal went into lunch, three wickets down and somewhat in trouble.

Post lunch, Sandeep Sharma clean-bowled Anustup Majumdar (22) reducing Bengal to 114 for 4. In the very next over, Siddharth Kaul had the patient Writam Porel caught behind as Bengal was in deep trouble at 118 for 5. Porel scored a resolute 32 off 88 balls, with 3 hits to the fence.

Punjab had their tails up with two new batsmen at the crease in the form of Wriddhiman Saha and Laxmi Ratan Shukla. What followed was an attractive display of counter-attack from Saha and Shukla who scored runs at ease, stitching together a hundred-run partnership.

Shukla (62) was lured by leg-spinner Rahul Sharma and holed out in the deep. After getting the vital breakthrough Punjab took the second new ball and got immediate result. Off-spinner Arnab Nandi (22), who was giving ample support to Saha in a 33-run 7th wicket partnership, edged one behind as Punjab keeper Uday Kaul grabbed his third chance of the day.

Wriddhiman Saha remained unbeaten on 75 off 155 balls and giving him company was Veer Pratap Singh, when the stumps were drawn for the day.
