'Dhoni knows when and what to give up'

RANCHI: Rahul Dravid recently suggested that Mahendra Singh Dhoni should give up India's T20 captaincy and the leadership of Chennai Super Kings to reduce some of his workload.

Chanchal Bhattacharya, Dhoni's mentor and first cricket coach, told TOI on Wednesday that the India skipper might consider the suggestion, albeit in a different way.

"I know how keen Mahi is on playing the 2015 World Cup. So what Dravid has said has value but I'm sure Mahi knows when to give up and what to give up.

He may consider quitting Test and T20 captaincy, but it'll be his decision," said Bhattacharya at the JSCA International Stadium which will host its first international fixture on Saturday when Dhoni's India take on England.

Being someone who taught Dhoni the pros and cons of the game, Bhattacharya would be a proud man when his protege leads the team out at his home ground. Still in the thick of things as an organizer, seeing Team India play in Ranchi under a boy from Jharkhand is a dream come true for Chanchalda, as he is popularly called.

Dhoni's workload does worry him, though. "Forget about Tests, in a 50-over match, a wicketkeeper has to stand up and sit down again and again for 300 balls, apart from collecting the throws.

You can imagine how taxing it is on one's body. For him (Dhoni) it's worse because he has to lead the team also. There's no fatigue like mental fatigue," he remarked.

Dhoni, who made his India debut eight years ago against Bangladesh at Chittagong, has spent most of his international career as the captain of the side, leading India in 43 Test matches, 132 ODIs and 41 T20 Internationals.

Moreover, he has been the captain of Chennai Super Kings since the inception of the Indian Premier League in 2008, which adds 91 matches to the tally.

So he has played as captain in more than 300 matches at the age of 31. No wonder his captaincy has been drawing adjectives like "stale" and "unimaginative" of late.

Split captaincy, according to many, is the solution but the national selectors haven't looked interested so far.

However, if Dhoni really decides to give up Test and/or T20 captaincy, the selectors will be forced to bite the bullet.

Dhoni's captaincy count, so far
Tests: 43, ODIs: 132, T20Is: 41, IPL: 91
