Siddle run out after hitting a boundary!

CHENNAI: It was an unsavoury incident that could have been avoided, and one that, hopefully, will not trigger further issues when the four-Test series between India and Australia gets underway in Chennai later this week.

India A's Manpreet Gony clearly undermined values of sportsmanship when he concealed the fact that the ball had crossed the boundary line. Even worse, his ensuing throw to the bowler's end resulted in the run out of Australian speedster Peter Siddle. This happened despite the on-field umpire checking with Gony and spectators sitting in that region watching the incident in disbelief.

It was the 12th over of the final day of the three-day warm-up game and the 48th over of Australia's first innings. The visitors had already lost half their line-up for 182 while chasing India A's first-innings total of 451.

Siddle had lashed left-arm spinner Rakesh Dhruv towards the mid-wicket fence where a pursuing Gony fumbled on the boundary line following which the ball appeared to have bounced off the boundary rope and right into his hands.

Gony's right foot also appeared to have touched the rope as his momentum almost took him over the boundary line. He seemed to have stepped back inside the playing arena as he threw the ball to Dhruv.

Siddle was caught short of the crease while attempting a third run. On-field umpire Anil Chaudhary referred it to match referee B Kalyanasundaram, who was left with a difficult decision to make in absence of cameras tracking the ball on the outfield. Siddle was given out.

Thankfully, though, the visitors chose to brush aside the dismissal, as it didn't exactly affect the course and outcome of the drawn match.
