Sehwag was dropped after a prolonged run of poor form. He had scored just 27 runs in the three innings that he played in the two Tests and looked far from convincing. That the selectors stuck to the remaining 14 members of the squad that was picked for the first two Tests and didn't name any reserve opener, indicates that the selectors wanted to send Sehwag a strong message.
"I will continue to work hard for my place in the team. I trust my game and am confident that, I'll be back," he wrote on his twitter page apart from extending good wishes to MS Dhoni and the rest of the team for the remainder of the series.
Working hard or training hard hasn't been part of Sehwag's routine as he has always relied on his famous hand-eye coordination and fearsome God-given talent.
However, it's upto him now to work a method which can see him board that plane to South Africa in December. He has already lost his spot in the ODIs and T20s and unless something drastic happens, it is unlikely that he will play in the Champions Trophy in England or in the Tri-series in West Indies or the seven-match ODI series against Australia in October next year. That leaves him with a good six months to explore opportunities in county cricket.
Playing six days a week in conditions where the ball will move and the wickets will be damp might just give him a new lease of life. However, for that to happen he will have to shed that superstar image of his which has often been his undoing. He will also need to improve his fitness and shed some weight if he has to rediscover his run-making methods.
When he was dropped for the first time in 2007, he found the motivation to train hard, play lots of matches in domestic cricket and show the right attitude for the then Indian skipper Anil Kumble to take him to Australia as the 17th member. The move worked as Sehwag announced himself with a match-saving 151 at Adelaide where he played with immense responsibility. He also had the ODI route available to him to chart his Test comeback. Now though that route is closed.
Post his IPL commitments for Delhi Daredevils, Sehwag, if serious about his comeback, should send feelers to the counties that he is ready for a county stint. If he does well in county cricket, there is no reason why he can't force his way back. If not as an opener, then as Rahul Dravid suggested, as a middle-order batsman. Especially if a certain Sachin Tendulkar decides to end his career after the Australia series.
