It was Sachin Tendulkar who welcomed Pujara to the crease when he made his debut against Australia in Bangalore three years ago. But he got out for just 4 while Tendulkar went on to score a masterly 214. Pujara and Tendulkar again came together in the second innings where they had a 57-run partnership for the third wicket and put India on road to victory. Pujara scored 72 and Tendulkar was unbeaten with 53.
At Wankhede on the second day, when the whole world was focused on Tendulkar, Pujara silently, reached his fifth Test hundred (two of which are double hundreds). His father and coach Arvind Pujara watching his son on TV far away in Rajkot later said that no coaching manual or coach can teach what Pujara Jr learnt during his partnership with Tendulkar.
"I am so glad that Chintu (as he is fondly called) got a big partnership with Tendulkar finally. Tendulkar is an institute himself and to get to watch him from just 22 yards away is Chintu's good fortune. They would have talked in between overs about match strategies, playing different bowler in different way and many such things. And all these when he is playing his last game. Can any coach teach how to play under this kind of pressure and billion expectations," asked Pujara.
"The pitch too was a bit difficult in the morning and it eased out as the day progressed so I think Cheteshwar played a good innings but what he learnt from his partnership with Tendulkar today is the bigger achievement for him," added Pujara Sr.
