While, Watson will don the captain's hat, former captain Rahul Dravid will now work as the team mentor. With Dravid retiring from all formats of the game, the Royals team management kept faith in the vastly experienced Watson as their new captain.
The Australian, who has been a key player for the Royals since the inaugural edition of the IPL in 2008, is excited about his new job. "I am honoured to lead Rajasthan Royals, an extraordinary team which has always given me amazing opportunities," Watson said on Monday.
Aware of the fact that it will be a big challenge for him to fill into the shoes of Dravid, Watson is looking forward to deliver the goods as the leader. "Shane Warne and Rahul (Dravid) had a lot of faith in me while they were captains and gave me opportunities that helped me improve my game.
"I hope to live up to the expectations and give our fans an exciting season of cricket," he added. Having seen the highs and lows, Watson, however, is confident of putting up a good show.
"My aim will be to continue playing our best cricket and maintain the winning momentum. We had tremendous success in 2008, and were quite close to the title last season. I am confident that we can do it again," the newly-appointed captain added. Mentor Dravid was also happy with the appointment of Watson.
"I would like to congratulate Watson on his appointment. He is not only one of the world's best all-rounders, but a leader par excellence," Dravid said.
"Watson has been with the team since the first season and is familiar with the players and the staff. We have a bunch of extremely energetic and talented players who know their roles well, and I am sure they will thrive under Watson's leadership," Dravid added.
