The hosts, set a target of 99 runs in a minimum of 21 overs after Pakistan were bowled out for 180 in their second innings, coasted home in the 17th over in front of 5,000 home fans.
Mahela Jayawardene, who is due to retire from Test cricket after the series, opened the innings and scored 26 as the hosts beat fading light and approaching rain to record a good win.
Kumar Sangakkara made 21 and skipper Angelo Mathews remained unbeaten on 25 as rain hit Galle soon after the match ended.
The second and final Test will start at the Sinhalese Sports Club in Colombo on Thursday.
