IPL play-off matches shifted to Delhi

NEW DELHI: The play-off matches (Qualifier 1 and Eliminator) of the ongoing T20 league is finally out of Chennai and Delhi will host the matches on May 21 and 22.

"The matches have been shifted to Delhi," the league chairman Rajeev Shukla told TOI. Earlier, Bangalore was considered one of the venues. But the league council voted in favour of Delhi.

The matches were shifted out of Chennai since the team owners had objected to their Sri Lankan players not being allowed to play in the southern city due to a political issue.

Mumbai opt to bat against Bangalore

NEW DELHI: Mumbai Indians captain Rohit Sharma won the toss and chose to bat against Royal Challengers Bangalore at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai on Saturday.

Watch IPL Videos

Mumbai have brought in Dhawal Kulkarni in place of Yuzvendra Chahal, while Bangalore have left out an ill Murali Kartik and replaced him with Syed Mohammed.

It will be imperative for Mumbai to get Chris Gayle early if they are to continue their winning momentum, after the positive result against Kolkata Knight Riders.

For the record, Gayle had smashed his way to the fastest century in the history of T20 cricket in his team's massive win over Pune Warriors. And the strapping Jamaican has it in him to do an encore once more.

With Gayle in such roaring form, no total can be called safe, and that is why Mumbai would look to score as many as possible.

Dwayne Smith and Rohit Sharma engineered Mumbai to a morale-boosting win over Kolkata in their last away match. But Sachin Tendulkar failed to rise to the occasion on his 40th birthday, and the veteran batsman will look to make up for that.

The five-wicket win over Kolkata would have surely boosted Mumbai's confidence, as it came after two heavy defeats -- to Rajasthan Royals by 87 runs and Delhi Daredevils by nine wickets.

On the other hand, Bangalore, especially Gayle, would look to continue from where he had left the other day. He is leading the run charts with 432 runs.

RCB captain Virat Kohli, too, has been in good form with 333 runs, while AB de Villiers has been the perfect foil to both Gayle and Kohli, scoring quick runs towards the end.

Pacers R Vinay Kumar and Ravi Rampaul have been outstanding, especially in the absence of Zaheer Khan.

Gayle dedicates feat to Caribbean fans

Written By Unknown on Jumat, 26 April 2013 | 21.24

KINGSTON: Bit-hitting West Indies opener Chris Gayle has dedicated his world-record feat of scoring the fastest-ever century in competitive cricket to fans in the Caribbean.

Watch IPL Videos

The strapping Jamaican established a series of records on way to an undefeated 175 off a mere 66 balls for Royal Challengers Bangalore against Pune Warriors in an Indian Premier League (IPL) match on Tuesday.

Gayle recorded the fastest 50 in IPL history, fastest 100 in T20 history and the highest individual score in T20 format.

"I had a chance to speak with Chris via social media after the game and he wanted me to let the fans in the Caribbean know that he was dedicating the knock to them," president of the West Indies Players Association (WIPA), Wavell Hinds, was quoted as saying in the media.

"He told me that it was very rewarding to see the positive early reactions to his innings from the regional supporters."

Gayle's innings, which included a staggering 17 sixes and 13 fours, paved the way for RCB to complete a massive 130-run win, the biggest in IPL history.

"I am sure that we speak for all true fans of West Indies cricket when we say that his innings will go down as the greatest in the brief history of T20 cricket," said Hinds.

"We wish him continued success, for the remainder of the IPL, and certainly hope that he will bring his current form to the ICC Champions Trophy later this year."

'I do prepare differently for T20 format'

CHENNAI: He holds the record for slamming the quickest ton on Test debut, but Shikhar Dhawan has made it clear that his approach to the traditional five-day format is completely different from the way he enters a Twenty20 game.

Watch IPL Videos

Dhawan announced his arrival in the Test arena with a swashbuckling 85-ball century against Australia last month, following which he was ruled out of action due to a hand injury.

"I do change my game a lot. Yes, I did score the fastest century on Test debut but I didn't plan to do so. It was a lucky day for me and it just happened. But generally when I am playing days of cricket I do go slow. I do prepare very differently for T20 format, mostly suiting to the demands of the game," Dhawan said.

The 27-year-old Sunrisers Hyderabad player yesterday returned to the field in the ongoing Indian Premier League, and straightaway hogged the limelight with a blazing half-century against Chennai Super Kings.

"When I started batting in the nets I found that I had the same flow and rhythm that I felt during the Test. So, I just came in keeping in mind how to pace my innings and plan it.

"I worked on my skills in the nets and decided to plan the rest on the basis of the wicket and the bowling," he said.

Forced out of the side due to an injury moments after setting a world record, Dhawan said it was a deeply frustrating break.

"I batted so well in my first Test and then to miss out on playing the second one was very tough. But I tend to see things in a positive way. I believe things happen for the better."

Dhawan, who came back to bat after getting hit during Thursday's match, struck four boundaries straightaway.

"I was just feeling good that the pain had lessened and I was again ready to go and bat. I'm pretty used to this pain - I keep getting fractures and such injuries. The pain doesn't take the smile off my face.

'Wanted to be a mixture of Viv, Sunny'

MUMBAI: Sachin Tendulkar, one of the greatest batsmen the game has ever seen, today said it was important to have heroes in life and he himself wanted to be a combination of his childhood idols Vivian Richards and Sunil Gavaskar.

"Every person likes his own identity and that is important. It is good to have heroes. When I was growing up, I had a couple of heroes. I wanted to be a combination, a mixture of Vivian Richards and Sunil Gavaskar," said Tendulkar during an interaction with his fans at gaming and experience centre 'Smaaash'.

"So it is important for this generation to have heroes and try and get closer to anywhere you can to your heroes. Heroes will always be heroes, so that is how it should be."

The senior cricketer, who celebrated his 40th birthday a couple of days ago, also cut a cake to mark the occasion and said, "This was the 40th cake that I have cut, so we should stop now."

As a batsman he has had problems with the sightscreen and the scorer of 100 international hundreds admitted this.

"You know I keep complaining about sightscreens. That is what I go through. When I am batting there are more than 50,000 people around and you can't spot the ball because of the release point sometimes as the sightscreens are not high enough.

"But there is not much choice. It makes you focus harder. You get a fraction of a second less to react and those are the things that you can't change much. You just have to adjust and try and find ways to prepare yourself early when the bowler is delivering," the master blaster said.

"Because you get a fraction second less the adjustment to make up for that loss time is in your hands, to get ready a fraction earlier to that spot. That is what I try to do on various occasions when I find it difficult to spot the ball."

Asked whether he and Mumbai Indians teammate and skipper Ricky Ponting, a former captain of Australia, are sharing tips during the ongoing Indian Premier League, Tendulkar replied in the affirmative.

"Yes we do. We play for the same team. We want to achieve the same goal. When you become part of the same team, you do share whatever your thoughts are and that is how any team should be," he said.

Tendulkar said he has been sharing his knowledge about domestic cricketers with Ponting.

"Here I have been sharing little more in detail, because I know little bit about our cricketers, which Ricky hasn't had the opportunity to watch them much. Also a lot of things are planned in team meetings.

"But there are things that spontaneously come to your mind and you share your thoughts. So it is basically about sharing our knowledge and giving some background about the bowler."

Tendulkar said having a strong passion for the game and willingness to put in hard work to improve skills should be the top priorities for budding cricketers.

"First and foremost, to be madly in love with cricket is important. You can't count the number of hours, the number of balls you have practiced, the number of balls that you have bowled. You can't be counting. You cant look at your watch. You have to just practice and practice.

"When I was your age, I practised quite long hours. I would start by 7.30 in the morning and finish by 7.30 in the evening. Eventually my coach had to sort of pack my kit bag and send me off saying `it is too dark to play cricket and we all want to go home'."

"My passion was such and still alive. Boys like you or even girls now, whoever wants to become a cricketer, should be passionate about the game. Cricket should be in your heart first and then as you mature and grow slowly you will find how to score runs and how to bowl over, how to bowl spells. First cricket has to be in your heart and the rest follows."

Asked why he doesn't bowl as much as he used to in the past he said, "I think there are better bowlers than me. Yes I did bowl earlier, but may be my turn to bowl never came or the other bowlers were performing well. They are doing well.

"Occasionally I prefer bowling but I don't think I was ever a regular bowler. More of a partnership breaker kind of a thing, you know when there was a long partnership I would come on. Bowl a couple of overs, when I did.

"If it worked it worked, if it didn't then no stress because you have got main bowlers to take the pressure and responsibility. In one-day cricket, yes I did bowl but now I have retired from one-day (cricket)."

The senior player, who retired from one-day format of the game in December, has picked up 154 wickets in ODIs.

Asked whether he would conduct a training class, Tendulkar said he would be willing to share his thoughts with them once he retires from the game. "It is exciting, yes. At some stage I would come and share my thoughts here. As long as I am an active cricketer it is difficult.

"But once I stop playing then there would be various occasions where I would love to share my thoughts with all of you and work with you. If you like them, we can try it out. That is something that will require a lot of commitment, lots of time. At this stage, it is not possible."

On his prized possessions, he said, "I am leaving out my family, because that is beyond anything. Other than that, I like music and I have met various great personalities. The greats from Indian music. They all have gifted me some or the other thing, which means a lot to me.

"(Playback legend) Lata (Mangeshkar) didi has promised something special so it will be reaching me soon. Ashaji (Bhosle) gave me something special of hers which sits in my music room.

"From the Western (music) side, Mark Knopfler of `Dire Straits' has given me his personal guitar. I have got another guitar from U2, which is signed by the entire band. Those things are important because I am into music. At this moment, I would say these are the things that are dear to me."

Asked how to score 10 runs off the last over (in a T20 game), he said there was no set formula to achieve this.

"I think it important to know who the bowler is and what are his strengths. Then you have got to set yourself up for that. There is no set formula as such. We have also seen matches where it is eight runs and the side hasn't been able to score those runs. Sometimes you need 20 runs and you can go out there and get them.

"Basically you have got to see what the bowler is bowling and what his strengths are, weaknesses are. What are the areas where you can score off that particular bowler. There are many factors like the kind of surface you are playing on, the kind of field setting.

"What you need is awareness on field, you have got to have situational awareness. Once you have that, you respond to the situation according to the bowler and the opposition."

Asked about the secret of his longevity, Tendulkar once again stressed the importance of being passionate about the game which he said has given him everything.

"As I said that you have to be very passionate about it. I can't call it as a profession. Cricket is much more than that. It's been my life, has given me everything in my life, whatever I have (achieved) is because of cricket. So you have to be passionate about it. You have to lead a disciplined life, a focused life."

Tendulkar emphasised on the importance of taking timely breaks from the game. "Yes there are times when you want to stay away from the game a little bit and get your mind fresh, your body fresh. So it is good to have breaks."

"I have just tried doing that and it has worked. So it's a simple method which you follow and don't complicate your life in too many things."

On his classic trademark shot - the straight drive, Tendulkar told the youngsters, "I can't say boost is the secret of my energy (tagline of an energy drink ad featuring him). (For) straight drive, all you need to do is your head position has to be right. To play a straight drive, your balance has to be good.

"If your balance is not good then you are not going to be able to play straight, you either drag it with bottom hand to mid-wicket or you slice it to cover or cover point. But when your body is aligned nicely, you have good balance and good head position, then you can hit bowlers straight."

"For batting or bowling, generally on a cricket field, you have to got have good body balance," he added.

Tendulkar advised to put away negative thoughts from the mind in order to succeed. "Simply turn the page of negative thoughts go on to the other page of the book. You got to have positive energy flowing in your body because negative energy is going to tighten you up.

"If you are thinking of something very positive it happens. It is as simple as that. It is important that once you get on the field to make yourself comfortable. To make yourself believe that this place belongs to you, not the opposition, and then dictate your terms.

"It's all about what you think, its all about how you plan and then you execute. But the most important thing is to believe," he said.

Tendulkar said it was important to be single-minded when playing the game. "I don't think about watching movies (when I bat). You can't think of anything else. Your mind is full of ideas, how to score against a particular bowler. Bowler is constantly asking you a question and you are responding to that question, whatever is delivered."

"For that your focus has to be on the ball and the bowler. So I have no other thoughts on mind. I am just thinking of how many runs I can score and how we can win."

The legendary cricketer said he has just tried being himself when asked how he could remain humble despite the stature he has achieved in the game.

"I have just been myself. People have liked me over the years for what I am, so I don't think after all this I need to change. I don't need to change I am just being myself. It is my family's upbringing. All credit to my parents and my brothers and my sister who shaped my career. That is one thing but shaping me as a person in life that is important."

"The second half of my life - my wife, my children, my wife's family, my in-laws ....they all had contribution in keeping me grounded. It creates a huge difference if you have the right team behind you and I am fortunate to have the right team behind me and the right friends.

"I follow the simple advice which my father gave me ages ago. Everything in life stays temporary with you. The only thing that stays permanently with you is the nature, the way you are. So that stays with you till your last breath.

"Try and be a a nice person first and then if you want to become a cricketer or a lawyer or a doctor or play hockey, whatever, then the rest of the things follow. But if you are a nice person everyone will like you ."

Asked if he trains his son Arjun, who is a member of the Mumbai under 14 team, Tendulkar said he does not interfere in his coaching.

"He has a lot of opinions. He tells me what to do and what not to do. That is the beauty of having children around. I don't train him much. I don't interfere much. He has got coaches around and he listens to them.

"Whatever I have spotted, I occasionally share my thoughts. But he should have freedom to express himself on the field the way he wants to play. If minor adjustments can produce better results then I do guide. But otherwise I don't interfere too much," Tendulkar said.

IPL 6: Punjab to bat against Kolkata

NEW DELHI: Kings XI Punjab won the toss and elected to bat against Kolkata Knight Riders in the IPL clash at the Eden Gardens stadium on Friday.

Watch IPL Videos

Kolkata have brought in a leg-spinner in place of Iqbal Abdulla. Azhar Mahmood staged a come back in Punjab squad in place of Pomersbach, while Gurkeerat Singh replaced Parvinder Awana.

With just four points in their kitty from seven matches, KKR need a morale-boosting victory against Kings XI Punjab to remain in the mix.

If KXIP find themselves in fifth spot on the points table, two rungs above KKR, it is because they have punched above their weight to snatch a couple of improbable wins.

The biggest advantage of KXIP is that, unlike KKR, their relatively "unknown" domestic cricketers have chipped in with useful contributions to pull off victories against higher-rated opponents.

Kolkata Knight Riders: Yusuf Pathan, Gautam Gambhir(C), Jacques Kallis, MS Bisla, Eoin Morgan, DB Das, Rajat Bhatia, SMSM Senanayake, Sunil Narine, S Ladda, L Balaji

Kings XI Punjab: Adam Gilchrist(C), Mandeep Singh, Manan Vohra, David Hussey, Azhar Mahmood, David Miller, Gurkeerat Singh, Piyush Chawla, Praveen Kumar, Harmeet Singh, BA Bhatt

Virat reminds me of myself: Viv Richards

Written By Unknown on Kamis, 25 April 2013 | 21.24

NEW DELHI: Virat Kohli on Thursday received the biggest compliment of his cricket career with West Indies batting legend Sir Vivian Richards saying the talented Indian batsman reminds him of his own batting.

"I love watching Virat Kohli bat. He looks to me like an individual of my own heart. I love his aggression and serious passion that I used to have. He reminds me of myself," Richards said.

"He is an individual who doesn't back off from confrontation. Someone who can stand his ground under pressure. I love that as you can't teach these instinctive aspects," Richards said on Thursday.

The 61-year-old Richards, regarded as one of the greatest batsmen in the game's history, said that even while fielding, Kohli is a lot like him.

"Just like me, he loves the ball to come to him. He wants to dive, stop the runs. He is a livewire unlike some fielders, who would just dig a hole and dive in it rather than dive to stop the ball!" he said.

Asked whether Kohli will be the 'flag bearer' of Indian batting once Sachin Tendulkar retired, Richards sounded positive.

"I believe till the Master of Shaolin (Tendulkar) is there, you need to give him respect. Obviously, once Sachin retires, you can bank on Kohli as he is young enough and has a lot of time on his side. He will only improve and continue to get better," he explained.

While Richards is a great fan of skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni's cool approach, he did not forget to mention that the Indian team needs to win on overseas soil regularly.

"What a way to come back against the Aussies (in the recent Test series at home). But for me, the determining factor of how good you are is when you win anywhere. You don't have to wait until you play at home to beat your opponent.

"I agree that it's vital to defend home turf but it's crucial to win outside," Richards said, making no bones about what he felt about Team India's recent performances.

"For me, it used to give me immense pride to perform away from home. Look at Steve Waugh's team or Ricky Ponting's team till a certain point of time. They were great teams because they won in all conditions. That I believe was the essence of 'Fire in Babylon'(Documentary on West Indies cricket)."

'King Richards' was also forthright in pointing out that India's away Test series in South Africa at the end of the year would be a tough assignment.

"It's going to be tough. South Africa are the best Test nation in the world at the moment with the most successful and aggressive bowling attack ( Dale Steyn, Morne Morkel, Vernon Philander). You saw what happened to Pakistan a few months back. It will be the ultimate test," he said.

"But Dhoni is one of the coolest individual and I liked the way he got his job done during the recent Australia series. But having won 4-0, people may expect more in South Africa, which is a huge ask. But if they can collectively work together, they can keep hopes alive," he said.

Asked what would have been his auction price had he been playing in the IPL era, Richards jokingly said "may be one pound!"

'When to retire should be Sachin's call'

NEW DELHI: Sachin Tendulkar's prolonged form slump may have raised questions on his retirement but West Indies batting legend Sir Vivian Richards reckons the veteran batsman is still a "class act" and should not be pressured into calling time on his career.

"When Sachin wants to retire is his call. It's completely an individual call. He alone should decide. I would never dare to walk up to Sachin and tell him that 'You go tomorow'," Richards said.

"Everyone knows that I am a fan of Sachin. He is still a class-act and doesn't look out of place even in T20's which is a modern day game. Let him go to 50 and I will still like to watch him," Richards, who is in an advisory role with Delhi Daredevils team, told reporters here today.

Richards felt that the meticulous approach with which Tendulkar prepares for a match is an indicator about his passion for the game and something that youngsters can learn from.

"Having Sachin is an wonderful indicator about how one prepares for a match," he said.

The veteran of 121 Tests said that Virender Sehwag still has a lot to offer to Indian cricket and should take a cue from Chris Gayle's batting approach.

"We all know that Sehwag is a magnificent player. What has happened to him can happen to the best players but I will always have him in my team," he pointed out.

"Viru can take a cue from Gayle's approach. When I mean you bluff the opposition, it's about changing your approach a little bit. Gayle loves to hit sixes from the first ball but there are times when he waits for a certain period of time before attacking.

"I want Viru to do that. Take a few singles and stay there. Because when players like Gayle and Sehwag stay for a longer period of time, the bowling side starts sweating a little. They start apprehending as to when these guys will have a go," Richards explained.

"It's like driving. When you see the red light, you have got to stop and wait. Again when you see the green light, you set your foot on the pedal and accelerate", Richards pointed out.

The Delhi Daredevils' IPL has been disastrous but Richards said that he has come to "keep the hopes alive."

"They (Daredevils) did very well last year and just because they have lost doesn't make them a bad team overnight. If they work collectively, better days are sure to come," he said.

The 61-year-old Antiguan believes that one needs to look at the bigger picture about how results can change in sports over a period of time.

"Look at Barcelona and Real Madrid. Such great teams taking a hiding in the Champions League semi-finals regardless of the quality of players they have. But they need to continue to keep up the faith and show the 'never-say-die' attitude."

When questioned whether Gayle's technique of "stand and hit" will mark an end to all the coaching manuals which talk about footwork and shoulder position etc, he said "I doubt Chris plays like this in Tests".

"You have to realise that each format now has a different requirement. I am very happy to see the way modern day cricket has evolved in the era of T20. I wouldn't like to get into comparisons as to how I would have fared. I guess, everyone nowadays fancies their chances when you have 65-yard boundaries."

Richards gave a simple about batsmanship. "Batsmanship is all about hitting the gaps. If you can't find the gaps, you have to clear the boundary."

Asked what would have been his batting position in T20 cricket, opening or No 4, he replied, "I guess when you play a fast and furious game like T20, you expect to face as many deliveries as possible. You need enough time to compete. I guess the best should play most of the bowling."

Richards believed that a stare at the fast bowler was good enough rather than indulging into mindless sledging.

"For me, aggression is not about having an elaborate discussion on each other's parenthood! For me, it's about standing my ground. You might get out early and get a mouthfull from the fast bowlers.

"Fast bowlers are different substance but you need to stand upto that pressure. Try and score 100, 150 or even 200. That's the best way to answer as seeing your face should hurt that fast bowler."

Chennai made no change to their playing XI while Hyderabad will get the service of Shikhar Dhawan who stages a comeback after recovering from a hand injury.

Hyderabad, like the Super Kings, have five wins from seven matches, although they did not achieve it with the same fluency and authority of that of the Lions.

Expectations will be high when Shikhar Dhawan walks out to bat for Sunrisers Hyderabad against CSK here on Thursday. The exciting Delhi left-hander's return from a hand injury is a huge boost for Hyderabad who have been struggling with their batting.

KKR are tough to beat at home: Lehmann

KOLKATA: Form might be favouring the Kings XI Punjab with two wins on the trot but coach Darren Lehmann on Thursday said Kolkata Knight Riders would be tough to beat on Friday since they were playing at home and the last few games they have lost were pretty close.

Watch IPL Videos

"We managed to get across the line against KKR the last time at home. But obviously they are a very good side and tough to beat at home," Lehmann said on the eve of the match.

"They probably should have won the last couple of games but fell at the last hurdle. That's the nature of T20 cricket. It's a tough road trip for us. We just have to keep going. We have no advantage. It's them who have got the home advantage."

The coach was not overtly worried with injuries to Jacques Kallis, Manoj Tiwary and Laxmi Ratan Shukla.

"I don't think there would be an edge. There would be an overseas player and a domestic player who would be waiting to take the opportunity. Whoever they play, we just got to beat the XI."

Lehmann further said his deputy WV Raman, who is the Bengal coach, would have a big role to play on Friday.

"He will tell us what we're doing tomorrow. They have coached here and spent a long time in these conditions. He knows these conditions so well. He is probably more of a coach in this game than what I am," he said.

Lehmann was surprised to see 160 being surpassed by Mumbai Indians at the otherwise slow Eden.

"We saw last night 160 being chased. Probably it was not a 160-wicket. Both sides did not bowl the way they could have. Probably the bowlers who adapt the conditions the best would come out on top tomorrow."

Without boasting any big names, Kings XI Punjab batsmen have been successful as they chased down Pune Warriors 186 and 121 by Delhi Daredevils with ease.

Lehmann said it's exciting time to coach the young lads. "We need to keep improving. It's a whole team effort. We have got a mix of very good young domestic players and some experienced overseas ones. They all are doing their job at different times. If they keep gelling as a team, it's really great fun to be a coach," he said.

Asked whether Mandeep had the abilities to make it to national colours, Lehmann said, "Oh yes. He is a very good player. The big challenge for him is to be more consistent and make runs every time he plays. He has been very good for us in the last few games. If he keeps doing that, he has a great future."

Mumbai Indians regular skipper Ricky Ponting showed fine team spirit on Wednesday as he stepped down to hand over the captaincy to Rohit Sharma.

Lehmann however indicated that the struggling Kings XI Punjab skipper Adam Gilchrist would like to get runs under his belt.

"I don't know about him, you'll have to ask him. He is captain and has led really well and kept very well. Obviously we want some more runs from him. It's been well-documented. Even he would like to hit more runs. We will have to wait and see," he said.

Giving an update on Shaun Marsh (hamstring pull) who is yet to play a match, Lehmann said, "He is not fit yet and will not play tomorrow."

Sachin thanks fans for unconditional love

Written By Unknown on Rabu, 24 April 2013 | 21.24

KOLKATA: Sachin Tendulkar was a picture of humility as he celebrated his 40th birthday with a brief cake-cutting ceremony, thanking his legions of fans for their "unconditional love" in a cricket career spanning over two decades.

The Mumbaikar, who would be seen in action during an IPL match for his team Mumbai Indians against the Kolkata Knight Riders later tonight, made a brief statement to the media before cutting a cake.

"Let me take this opportunity to thank all the people in India and well wishers all over the world who have supported me and showered me with unconditional love," said the veteran, whose wife Anjali was by his side during the ceremony.

"It has been really special and it is because of their good wishes that I am standing here," he added.

Tendulkar said he wanted to thank each one of his fan personally for supporting him for over 24 years.

"Since I can't do that, it is a good opportunity to thank the every little thing that they have done for me, like fasting for me during injuries. I just wanted to say thank you," he said.

Tendulkar got the first bite of his birthday cake from Anjali's hands who giggled after being called from the backstage by the batsman on the insistence of the present journalists and photographers.

"Now, don't ask her to put it on my face next," joked the veteran cricketer.

Earlier, the Cricket Association of Bengal celebrated Tendulkar's birthday a day in advance by cutting a 10-pound cake in the presence of 100 blind students.

The blind students from Narendrapur Ramakrishna Mission Blind School and Light House for the Blind cut the cake in the evening.

In a career spanning 24 years, Tendulkar has got almost all the batting record to his name other than Brian Lara's Test highest of 400 not out.

Tendulkar, who has called it quits from the ODI format to prolong his Test career, has a colossal 18426 runs from 463 matches with 49 hundreds at an average of 44.83.

In the leading run-getters list of Test matches, Tendulkar is sitting on 15837 runs with 51 hundreds, way ahead of South African veteran Jacques Kallis who with 13128 runs is the only playing batsman to be in the race at fourth place.

Tendulkar has played only one T20 for India as he has limited his Twenty20 ambition to his franchise Mumbai Indians in the IPL.

'Tense' Sachin cuts 40th birthday cake

KOLKATA: An epitome of calmness on the cricket field, Sachin Tendulkar said he felt "tense" cutting his 40th birthday cake even as he humbly thanked his millions of fans world over for showering him with "unconditional love" for over two decades.

In Pics: Sachin cuts 40th birthday cake

"(I have) never been so tense actually while cutting a cake. Thank you everybody for this gesture. It's really touching," Tendulkar said in a brief cake-cutting ceremony where his wife Anjali was also present.

The veteran batsman said it was his former teammate Anil Kumble's wishes that helped calm the nerves.

"While walking to get here, I met Anil Kumble along the way who wished me 'Happy Birthday' and told me, 'don't worry, 40 is just a number.' So that was sort of relieving," he said with a smile.

Thanking his billions of fans worldwide, Tendulkar said it was because of their good wishes that he could continue playing more than two decades after his international debut.

"Let me take this opportunity to thank all the people in India and all across the world who are well-wishers of mine...They have supported me and showered their unconditional love on me over the last 23 years. So it's been really special," he said.

"It's because of their good wishes and prayers that I am standing here in front you all after 23 years. It's been my strength. I thought this was the best opportunity to come here and thank each and every one of them for every little thing that they have done for me," he added.

Tendulkar said there have been many special people in his life who have made various sacrifices for him.

"There have been so many people who have made various sacrifices, fasting and those kind of things when I was injured... I just want to say thank you which I believe is not enough.

"I would have personally liked to meet and thank them but it's not possible so I thought this was the best forum where I could reach out to most of them," he said.

Dressed in a formal charcoal black shirt, the Mumbai Indians batsman cut the customary cake while wife Anjali in a white salwar kameez was beside him in a special programme organised by his IPL franchise.

Tendulkar got the first bite of his birthday cake from Anjali's hands who giggled after being called from the backstage by the batsman on the insistence of the present journalists and photographers.

"Now, don't ask her to put it on my face next," joked the veteran cricketer.

The Mumbai Indians senior-most batsman is later scheduled to cut a 40-pound specially-ordered cake at the Eden Gardens ahead of their 8pm IPL match against Kolkata Knight Riders.

In a career spanning 24 years, Tendulkar has got almost all the batting records to his name other than Brian Lara's Test highest of 400 not out.

Tendulkar, who has called it quits from the ODI format to prolong his Test career, has a colossal 18426 runs from 463 matches with 49 hundreds at an average of 44.83.

'Sachin brought school books to England'

LONDON: World Cup-winning captain Kapil Dev says a shy and quiet Sachin Tendulkar was carrying his tenth class school books during his first tour of England in 1990, when he was all of 17.

"He (Tendulkar) was very quiet. On that first tour he was carrying his school books to study in tenth grade. He was shy, did not talk too much and he was just a normal kid. He did not involve himself in topics. He used to observe," said Kapil.

"Two thing were very different about him at that age. His balance was so good... Unbelievable. And he did not hit the ball. He pushed the ball. He had a heavy bat. During that period I had never seen someone using that heavy bat and he held the bat low down," Kapil told the BBC Radio 5 Live show.

Kapil was told to look after Tendulkar on that first tour to England, rooming with him, and he watched the young cricketer's ambidextrous skills with amazement.

"He did with the left hand, writing, eating. But batting, bowling was with right hand. Later on I realised he must be a genius who has power in both hands. That is the future of cricket. If you can have balanced power you can control the ball and balance of your body."

Kapil recalled the first time he watched Tendulkar bat in a domestic match.

"The first time I saw him bat was at Brabourne Stadium (in Mumbai) and I was asked to bowl at him. I was told he would get encouragement from it. I said 'who is he?' and was told he had done well in school cricket and to just bowl a few balls," recollected Kapil.

"He looked like a 14 year-old. He played with decent balance and I was very nervous to bowl to him. He was too young for me to bowl to. I bowled a couple of quick ones. He flicked them off and in the net you could see he looked good at that age. His ability was there but could not dream this young boy would be one of the finest cricketers to walk this earth."

Another former captain, Rahul Dravid, said it will be impossible to replace Tendulkar once the senior India batsman retires from international cricket, but added the game will go on.

"I don't think you should look to replace him, it will be impossible," Dravid said.

"There is a lot of talent there and they have to become who they want to be. When Sunil Gavaskar retired people said where would the next Sunil Gavaskar come from but then we had Sachin Tendulkar come through," he added.

Tendulkar retired from ODI cricket last year but is expected to carry on with his Test career for some time.

"For a whole generation of people it is going to be strange because they have grown up with Sachin but it is inevitable. It will happen. People move on. It is life. Cricket will go on. It is bigger than any individual. The greats have played before him and will continue to play after him," he added.

Asked to pick Tendulkar's greatest innings, former captains Sourav Ganguly and Gavaskar said it was his 114 against Australia at Perth in 1992.

India were heavily beaten but Tendulkar made 114 on a typically rock hard, bouncy pitch at the WACA.

"That is still the best. He was a young boy, about 18. It was a bouncy Perth pitch. We were hammered in that series but he smashed (Craig) McDermott and (Merv) Hughes on a quick WACA pitch," said Ganguly.

"We go to Australia quite a lot now and are used to those pitches but in those days we went once every six years and it was even harder to get used to the pace and bounce."

'Shikhar's presence will boost Sunrisers'

CHENNAI: Sunrisers Hyderabad mentor Krish Srikkanth said that explosive opener Shikhar Dhawan's presence in the playing XI will be a huge boost for the batting line-up that has blown hot and cold during this season of IPL.

"The best news for us is that Shikhar Dhawan is back and will be playing his first IPL match this season. It will be a big boost to our batting strength and we are confident of even chasing totals in excess of 190," Srikkanth announced about Dhawan's comeback to competitive cricket after a knuckle fracture kept him out of action for more than a month.

CSK may have some top class finishers but the former India captain and chief national selector doesn't want to draw any comparison between the two sides.

"We do not wish to be compared with other teams. All teams play to their strength. We are hopeful of getting in to the semi-finals. That's our first target," said Srikkanth.

The former opener also defended the team management's decision to drop regular skipper Kumar Sangakkara in favour of Quinton de Kock.

"He (De Kock) is a swashbuckling batsman. He has played only a couple of games and you cannot judhe him on basis of that. He is just 20 years old and had had terrific T20 season in South Africa."

Since both Sangakkara and Thisara Perera will be unavailable due to Tamil Nadu government' diktat, there is a possibility that West Indies captain Darren Sammy might get his first T20 game.

Gayle's fastest ton powers RCB to 263

Written By Unknown on Selasa, 23 April 2013 | 21.24

NEW DELHI: Chasing a record 264, Pune Warriors India lost half of their side at the score of 100 in their IPL match against Royal Challengers Bangalore at the Chinnaswamy stadium in Bangalore on Tuesday.

Scorecard

Pune team reached the 100-run mark in 78 balls. Seamer Ravi Rampaul picked up his second when he dismissed Steven Smith, who scored a brisk 31-ball 41 with the help of six boundaries.

Murali Karthik gave Bangalore first breakthrough as he dismissed Pune's Robin Uthappa in the very second ball of the first over.

Ravi Rampaul picked up the second wicket for Bangalore when he sent skipper Aaron Finch back in the dug out.

Seamer Jaydev Unadkat picked up two quick wickets as he scalped Luke Wright and Yuvraj Singh to dent Pune's mammoth run chase

Earlier, Chris Gayle hit the fastest century in the history of professional cricket blasting an incredible 175 off 66 balls as Royal Challengers Bangalore posted a record 263 for five against Pune Warriors.

Gayle hit the fastest century, off just 30 balls, and the highest-ever individual score in a T20 game surpassing Kolkata Knight Riders' Brendon McCullum who hit 158 off 73 balls against RCB at this very Chinnaswamy Stadium.

Incidentally, RCB's total was also the highest-ever total in any T20 game.

Put into bat, it was 'Gayle Force' that blew away the Pune Warriors as the big-bodied Jamaican showed his power-hitting ability as he struck 13 fours and 17 sixes en route the fastest ever T20 century off only 30 balls. 154 out of his 175 runs came in boundaries and off only 30 scoring strokes.

Typically, he brought up his century with a six off Ashoke Dinda that sailed over the stadium and in the process also damaged the roof.

The carnage started from the second over bowled by rookie paceman Ishwar Pandey. Playing his first IPL match, Pandey found out what top-level cricket was all about as Gayle hit him for five boundaries taking 21 runs of that over.

Mitchell Marsh and Aaron Finch got even worst treatments as they went for 28 and 29 runs in their respective overs as both were clobbered for four sixes each.

There was minimum fuss as usual in Gayle's batting as he barely had any footwork. It was just stand and deliver as the ball kept on sailing into the stands and there was little that skipper Finch could have done.

Intimidated by this mayhem, the Pune bowlers could only go through the motion. All the three changes made by Pune backfired as Pandey gave away 33 in two overs while left-arm spinner Ali Murtaza conceded 45 from his two overs.

It was Bhuvneshwar Kumar, who returned unscathed with figures of 0 for 23 from four overs.

Marsh, who came back in place Ajantha Mendis, was hammered for 56 in three overs while the profligate Dinda went for 48 off four overs.

Gayle and Dilshan added 167 runs for the opening stand with Tillakaratne Dilshan (33). Such was the ferocity of Gayle that Dilshan didn't even cross 20 when Gayle reached three-figure mark.

AB de Villiers also played his part to perfection with a cameo scoring 31 off eight balls (3x4, 3x6).

Gayle awestruck by his own exploits

BANGALORE: Regarded as the most dangerous batsman in Twenty20 cricket, Chris Gayle on Tuesday said that he himself was awestruck by his devastating 175-run knock against Pune Warriors and said it was one of those days when everything "he hit stayed hit".

Scorecard

Gayle hit the most breathtaking knock in the history of Twenty20 cricket blasting an incredible 175 not out off 66 balls to help Royal Challengers Bangalore post a record 263 for five in a Pepsi Indian Premier League match against Pune Warriors.

Gayle hit the fastest century, off just 30 balls, and the highest-ever individual score in a T20 game, surpassing Kolkata Knight Riders' Brendon McCullum who hit 158 off 73 balls against RCB at this very Chinnaswamy Stadium. Incidentally, RCB's total was also the highest-ever total in any T20 game.

"I am at loss of words myself. It was a good wicket and I started really well. It is just one of those when you hit the ball it stays hit. Everything was coming out of the middle of the bat," the big-hitting West Indian said after his scintillating unbeaten knock.

"In the first 6 overs I went bizzare and it actually paid off. And then I decided to slow it down in the middle period. Eventually we got a pretty good total and I am really happy with my performance," he said.

Put into bat, Gayle single-handedly blew away the Pune Warriors as the big-bodied Jamaican showed his power-hitting ability as he struck 13 fours and 17 sixes en route the fastest ever T20 century off only 30 balls.

Unstoppable Gayle creates history

NEW DELHI: Explosive opener Chris Gayle slammed the fastest century in cricket history, reaching the triple figure in just 30 balls during the Royal Challengers Bangalore-Pune Warriors IPL clash on Tuesday.

Though, the milestone came in an IPL clash, and not in any international tie, Gayle's fireworks will be remembered by cricket buffs for long.

Gayle pulverised the Pune attack and scored 175 not out in just 66 balls and hit 17 sixes, most in a T20 innings, and 13 boundaries in the process, to send the crowd in delirium. This was also Gayle's second ton in his IPL career.

Gayle blitz powered Bangalore to a T20 record 263 for five. The previous highest total by a team in this form of the game was 260 by Sri Lanka.

The Jamaican also became the highest-ever individual scorer in a T20 game surpassing Kolkata Knight Riders' Brendon McCullum who hit 158 off 73 balls against RCB.

By the time he had reached his century, 98 off Gayle's runs had come in boundaries (8 Fours and 11 Sixes). For the record, he consumed 23 balls to reach 150 from 100, which was the slowest of the three fifties, giving a fair indication of what he actually did to the clueless bowlers.

Pakistan's flamboyant batsman Shahid Afridi holds the record of fastest century in ODI (37 balls) while, Viv Richards is credited for scoring fastest ton (56 balls) in Test history.

South African Richard Richard Levi holds the record for fastest international T20 hundred. Levi had slammed 45-ball century against New Zealand in 2011 at Hamilton.

Gayle had, earlier, also scored record 50-ball 100 in T20I before Richard Levi surpassed his feat.

Gayle also beat the previous 34-ball ton Twenty20 league record set by Australia's Andrew Symonds.

RCB aim to sail past struggling Pune

Written By Unknown on Senin, 22 April 2013 | 21.24

BANGALORE: After a clinical win against Rajasthan Royals, table-toppers Royal Challengers Bangalore will be keen to continue their fantastic run when they lock horns with the beleaguered Pune Warriors in the Pepsi IPL on Tuesday.

Royal Challengers are on a roll after winning five matches they have played at home this season and would not want to fritter away their best chance to gain two more vital points before they play their next six games away.

The games would be a difficult proposition, considering they have lost both their away games against Sunrisers Hyderabad and Chennai Super Kings.

Unlike the previous IPL seasons, the Royal Challengers have managed to get rid of the tag of being over-dependent on explosive West Indian batsman Chris Gayle, who has 257 runs under his belt in seven matches with an unbeaten 92 being his highest score this season.

The home side has been fantastic even in case of a flopshow by Gayle, who also has to his credit 17 sixes and 22 boundaries.

Either their captain Virat Kohli or aggressive South African wicketkeeper batsman AB de Villiers have come to the party erasing the Gayle-dependent tag.

Unlike last year when he struggled to get runs, Kohli has been in great form and is already the Orange Cap holder for smashing 322 runs in seven games with three scintillating half centuries to his credit.

De Villiers has been the perfect foil to Gayle and Kohli, playing second fiddle to both in-form batsmen.

It may appear that the Indian players have not contributed enough for the Royal Challengers but they haven't got enough chances to display their class.

However, Mayank Agarwal, Lokesh Rahul and Arun Karthik, all of who have had their chances, have spilled them, making way for Tillakaratne Dilshan to stage a comeback.

Dilshan did not disappoint the team by crafting a match-winning 53-run partnership with Gayle for the first wicket in the previous game against Rajasthan.

Nevertheless, the young Indian players would like to strike form if given a chance again, depending on the pitch and playing conditions.

As far as Royal Challengers' bowling is concerned, after a couple of hiccups against Hyderabad and Chennai, they have delivered fine performances.

Their effort in the last game against Rajasthan Royals was exceptional as they did not concede any extras.

Vinay Kumar and Ravi Rampaul have been outstanding, especially in the absence of bowling spearhead Zaheer Khan.

They have taken up the responsibility to provide wickets for Royal Challengers at crucial stages and there are no surprises that the former has bagged the Purple Cap with 12 scalps to his credit.

With Royal Challengers registering a clinical win in their last encounter, it is unlikely that Kohli would make any changes to the side unless their are some injury issues.

In contrast, batting problems have plagued Pune Warriors who were handed a defeat by Kings XI Punjab in their last match.

Their top guns -- Yuvraj Singh Robin Uthappa, Manish Pandey, Angelo Mathews and Marlon Samuels -- haven't been consistent. The exception has been Aaron Finch who has scored an aggregate of 211 runs in five matches with three half centuries under his belt.

Pune have already broken an 11-match losing streak but the Angelo Mathews-led side has put up ordinary performances barring a couple of matches, which they won against Rajasthan and CSK.

On the bowling front, Leg-spinner Rahul Sharma has been the pick of Warriors' attack and has got good support from Mathews, though Ashok Dinda and Bhuvneshwar Kumar need to do better.

The Teams (From):

Royal Challengers Bangalore: Virat Kohli (captain), AB de Villiers, Chris Gayle, Tillakaratne Dilshan, Mayank Agarwal, Muttiah Muralitharan, R P Singh, Lokesh Rahul, Vinay Kumar, Cheteshwar Pujara, Jaydev Unadkat, Ravi Rampaul, K P Appanna, Sreenath Aravind, Arun Karthik, Daniel Vettori, Christopher Barnwell, Daniel Christian, Moises Henriques, Sheldon Jackson, Murali Kartik, Zaheer Khan, Andrew McDonald, Abhimanyu Mithun, Abhinav Mukund, Pankaj Singh, Prasanth Parameswaran, Harshal Patel, Sandeep Warrier, Sunny Sohal, Jamaluddin Syed Mohammad, Saurabh Tiwary, Vijay Zol.

Franchises to bear injuries' expenses

NEW DELHI: Indian cricketers who sustain injuries during the cash-rich Indian Premier League will now have to depend on their respective franchise to bear the costs of their rehabilitation at the National Cricket Academy (NCA).

This decision was taken at the NCA Committee meeting in Chennai on Monday during which members expressed the opinion that austerity measures needed to be taken in a bid to put an end to the ever-spiralling costs.

"It has been decided that from now on, the respective franchise or the player himself will have to bear the cost of his rehabilitation program at the National Cricket Academy in case the player sustains injury during the Indian Premier League," a BCCI official preferring anonymity told PTI today.

It had been learnt that the BCCI were shelling out a whopping amount in the tune of Rs 5.5 crore in order to pay the salaries of their coaching and administrative staff.

From 12-member support staff that was employed till date, the list has been pruned to six.

According to sources, the three coaches who will remain in the BCCI pay rolls are bowling coach Bharath Arun, batting coach Dinesh Nanavati and coaches' instructor Kinjal Suratwala. The three other members of the support staff will be two physios Ashish Kaushik and Nitin Patel along with trainer Sudarshan.

Asked about the six other members of the support staff, the source said, "From now on, they will only be summoned if there is a camp or a tournament. It will be more of a freelance employment which will be assignment-based."

The BCCI's NCA committee also trimmed the proposed budget of Rs 85 lakh to Rs 64 lakh for a National U-16 camp.

Even the proposal to hire five foreign coaches were shot down while former players will be invited from now on to conduct short clinics.

There has also been a proposal to rollback the salaries of the NCA administrative staff.

'Sehwag has a lot of cricket left in him'

NEW DELHI: Former national selector Yashpal Sharma feels Virender Sehwag has a lot of cricket left in him and said he can make a comeback in the Indian team if he gives attention to his fitness.

"Sehwag is a great player and he has contributed a lot in Indian cricket. He has a lot of cricket left in him and he will surely comeback in the Indian team," said Yashpal at the sidelines of the announcement of the Coca Cola Under-16 Cricket Cup national tournament on Monday.

Yashpal, a member of India's 1983 World Cup-winning team, said Sehwag's problem has been lack of fitness and if he concentrates on this aspect, he will bounce back and return to the national side with a bang.

"Whenever Sehwag is out of Indian team, it was not due to loss of form but some fitness issue. So, if he gives attention to his fitness, he will make a comeback. He has to look after his body," he said.

Asked about Sehwag publicly claiming that he "bluffed" on the advice of legendary West Indian batsman Vivian Richards who has joined Delhi Daredevils IPL team as advisor, Yashpal said, "Richards is a legendary figure and a very positive man and I have played against him. There was nothing negativity in his approach when he was playing.

"So, it must be that Richards must have told the players to be positive in their approach. Cricket is a mental game and self-confidence plays a big role. Now, we have to see how much Richards' pep talk has had an impact on the Delhi players. It's upto the players now," he said.

"Maybe Richards pep talk had an impact on Sehwag against Mumbai Indians as he hit a match-winning 95 yesterday, but we have to wait and see."

Yashpal also paid tribute to Sachin Tendulkar who turns 40 on Wednesday.

"Tendulkar is a real ambassador of the game. Not only India but the world of cricket should be proud of him and his contribution to the game. It's truly amazing that for 23 years he has kept his standard of cricket so high," he said.

IPL: Super Kings fumble in chase of 120

Written By Unknown on Sabtu, 20 April 2013 | 21.24

NEW DELHI: Chasing a 120-run target, Chennai Super Kings seemed to lose the plot when they lost a flurry of wickets in their IPL 6 match at the Eden Gardens in Kolkata.

Scorecard

Ravichandran Ashwin (11), who was promoted up the order and opened in place of Murali Vijay, put up a 24-run partnership with Michael Hussey before being caught by Sachithra Senanayake off the bowling of Sunil Narine.

Straight after, Senanayake struck with the ball to catch Vijay (2) plumb and send the Chennai batsman back to the dug-out.

Yusuf Pathan then got the all-important wicket of the dangerous Suresh Raina (7) when the southpaw was caught at long on by Narine to leave the visitors three down.

The Super Kings then suffered a big blow when their skipper MS Dhoni (9) fell short of his crease and was spectacularly run out by Eoin Morgan at the bowler's end.

Jacques Kallis then further dented Chennai's hopes when his slower ball bouncer found the better of Subaramaniam Badrinath's stumps, who completely failed in sweeping the ball.

Soon after, Laxmipathy Balaji was finally able to scalp Hussey (40) after the Aussie, who hit 2 boundaries and a single six, was caught by Pathan at deep square leg.

Earlier, Chennai bowling proved to hot for Kolkata Knight Riders to handle as the Dhoni-led side restricted the hosts to 119/9.

After the Kolkata Knight Riders openers gave the home team a good start, Chennai Super Kings marched their way back into the match with a flurry of dismissals.

Gautam Gambhir and Pathan put up a swift 46-run partnership for the opening wicket right after KKR won the toss and decided to bat against Chennai.

However, the moment was short-lived when Chris Morris proved elementary in dismissing Gambhir (25) when the KKR skipper was caught at third man by Hussey.

Kallis was next to in line to be dismissed when he was run out without facing a ball after some sublime work in the field by Badrinath.

Dwayne Bravo then joined the party when he scalped a precarious Eoin Morgan (2) after the KKR batsman hit a slower delivery high up in the air for Ravindra Jadeja to take a simple catch.

Soon after, Pathan (25) was caught amidst confusion between him and Manoj Tiwary and was therefore run out in the process. Pathan hit 4 boundaries in his innings.

The Knight Riders then seemed to revive their innings with a steady 27-run partnership between Debabrata Das and Tiwary, but Ravichandran Ashwin had other plans when he dismissed the duo.

While Das (19) was caught plumb by the Indian offie, Tiwary (14) in his attempt to hit a flamboyant shot was caught deep in the outfield by Mohit Sharma.

Jadeja then asserted his dominance and rubbed more salt on the Kolkata wound when he dismissed Rajat Bhatia (1), Laxmi Ratan Shukla (1) and Sunil Narine (13) in quick succession.

While Manvinder Bisla has been replaced by Shukla, which would allow Das to keep wickets for the Knight Riders, the Super Kings are heading into this match with an unchanged side.

Pushed to the bottom half of the table after yet another away defeat, Kolkata Knight Riders would look to bounce back in the tournament in this top-draw fixture against a resurgent Chennai team.

The Teams:

Kolkata Knight Riders: Gautam Gambhir (Capt), Jacques Kallis, Eoin Morgan, Manoj Tiwary, Yusuf Pathan, Debabrata Das (wk), Rajat Bhatia, Sachithra Senanayake, Sunil Narine, Laxmipathy Balaji, Laxmi Ratan Shukla.

Chennai Super Kings: Mahendra Singh Dhoni (Capt and wk), Murali Vijay, Michael Hussey, Suresh Raina, Dwayne Bravo, Subaramaniam Badrinath, Ravindra Jadeja, Albie Morkel, Chris Morris, Ravichandran Ashwin, Mohit Sharma.

'Can play for India as specialist batsman'

NEW DELHI: Mumbai Indians' Dinesh Karthik firmly believes that he has the ability to play for India as a specialist batsman and he is confident of delivering the goods when he gets another chance at the highest level.

"I have always had the confidence in my batting abilities. I have played as a batsman for India earlier also and I can deliver as a specialist batsman when I get an opportunity once again," said Karthik, who has so far scored 254 runs in five matches with a strike rate of nearly 150.

For him, the main motivation to do well in the IPL is the fact that every team has quality international fast bowlers.

"You look at teams and you will find that there are three international bowlers in each team. Tomorrow, if I do well against Morne Morkel, it will be a huge morale booster. Similarly, when we play against Sunrisers, you get to face Dale Steyn," Karthik explained.

The 'keepers slot is sealed for atleast a few more years as Mahendra Singh Dhoni is going to stay at the helm which means that he might have to be an outfielder. But Karthik is game about that.

"I don't need to stand in the outfield during IPL in order to play for India. In any case, if Aditya Tare plays for MI, I will certainly be in the outfield. In any case, I have been an outfielder when I played for Kings XI Punjab," said Karthik.

The 27-year-old thanked MI coach John Wright, mentor Anil Kumble and skipper Ricky Ponting for trusting him with the No 3 slot.

"I am thankful that the MI team management showed faith in me. It helps when you bat at No 3. Not only because of the number of balls you face but also with the quantum of runs that you can score. If you bat lower down the order in T20, then you don't get too many deliveries. Also the strike-rate becomes very crucial."

While he is happy with his consistency, Karthik is hopeful that Sachin Tendulkar and Ricky Ponting will fire as opening combination.

"True, that we didn't have great starts but we all know that what they are capable of."

About Delhi Daredevils, who have completed a double hat-trick of losses, Karthik said, "Daredevils haven't played to their potential so far but are a good team. For us, it is important to look at our strengths and weaknesses rather than focus on them. We have played some good cricket and some ordinary cricket so far."

Meanwhile, off-spinner Johan Botha in a roundabout manner admitted that like it or not, Kevin Pietersen's absence has really hurt the balance of the side.

"I wouldn't just point it at one man, we still have some really good other players international and Indian players who haven't just fired yet. KP was the one who put the foot down and took the team forward," Botha admitted.

Former T20 captain of South Africa wants someone to raise his hand and do a 'KP' this season.

"That's what you are looking for now again hopefully one of the guys can fire for us again put in that special performance but Kevin Pietersen is one of the best players in the world at the moment and you are not going to replace him he is too good for that. We are all going to miss him but it's a great opportunity for someone else to step up."

Jadeja inspires Chennai to beat Kolkata

NEW DELHI: A mesmerizing all-round performance by Ravindra Jadeja inspired Super Kings to beat Knight Riders by 4 wickets in their IPL 6 match at the Eden Gardens in Kolkata.

Scorecard | Match in Pics

Chasing a 120-run target, Chennai Super Kings seemed to lose the plot when they lost a flurry of wickets.

However, Jadeja (36* off 14 balls) showed his worth with a remarkable display of batting to lead the Super Kings to victory with 3 boundaries and 3 sixes to credit.

Earlier, Ravichandran Ashwin (11), who was promoted up the order and opened in place of Murali Vijay, put up a 24-run partnership with Michael Hussey before being caught by Sachithra Senanayake off the bowling of Sunil Narine.
